No-nos for a practical home

When it comes to home and living arrangements, I go for easy. No high-maintain decorations, gardening or unnecessary cleaning for me, thank you. Now I'll tell about some other things that I find unpractical and rather avoid in my home.
Of course, black as theme colour. Not just that it makes the space smaller and kills the lighting, it also shows fingerprints, dust and everything that gathers on open levels. With too much black, your living room may look like a scene in a horror movie - believe me, I googled many black living rooms before I found this not-scary shot. Black in other rooms is even worse, in bedroom it's scary and a black kitchen would require a daily professional cleaner.
This living room looks comfortable and beautiful, but I see several problems. The rug looks like it's difficult to vacuum. The tables are light and they could be moved for cleaning, but if the cats wouldn't drop the vase, it would fall every time you want to rest your feet on the table. (And the vase is in the way if you'd watch tv sitting on the chair.) The cushions look great, but in my home they'd first end up on the floor and then in a closet, after that I had fluffed and arranged them about five times. And last but not least, the blanket - soft, pretty and comfortable when you put it there. But sooner or later you drop coffee or food on it, a zip (or cat's nails) get stuck on it and make holes, in a few months it won't be so pretty anymore -  and long before that you've had enough with fluffing and folding it every single time you get off the couch. Living rooms are for living and relaxation, not an extra daily decorating job.
Now you ask what's wrong with that nice, grey and white kitchen? In general, it's pretty ok. But here's one thing that many kitchen planners don't seem to realise, based on how common it is: the door in the back leads probably to a bathroom or sauna area,  and/or the back door of the house. Picture yourself cooking and setting the table, and the rest of the family going back and forth, perhaps someone coming in via mudroom with toddlers or a couple of dogs. A small thing, but a nuisance that can and should be avoided.
Another modern and beautiful kitchen, surely nothing to complain about here? Take a closer look. The microwave is too high up to be safe, only a tall person could take down a hot soup bowl from there. The island doesn't actually serve any real purpose, other than that there are probably cabinets or drawers on the other side. The high chairs look uncomfortable for adults and unsafe for children. And the worst problem when it comes to being practical: when you set the table for a meal, where you take the stuff from? Right, from the fridge. Imagine yourself walking around that island day in, day out, carrying food and drinks, then carrying the dishes to the dishwasher that I think is beside the sink, surprise: you walk around the island once again. Why do they have these islands, when you could have the same storage space and counter next to a wall, or otherwise out of the way? In my home it would take a few weeks before every meal was eaten in front of the tv - you'd anyway fix the plate at the fridge door, so why not to carry it to the living room when you are on the move.
Laundry room or whatever you call the space for washing, ironing and other household chores. This one looks nice, but actually it's not very practical. I don't see where the dirty clothes are kept - hopefully not in the bag, or in the far too small baskets on the shelves? The counter is beautiful, but it doesn't serve for ironing, and the cabinets are quite small and don't give much storage space, perhaps just for some cleaning products. Some houses have very big laundry rooms, but I find it unnecessary - I'd rather have that space for living area, not for folding laundry.
So what is my solution for this - no "room" at all! We do have a small area next to the bathroom and sauna, where we keep laundry baskets and the washer. The space is like a small hallway and it also contains the cats' litter box, foldable drying racks, closets for towels, cleaning products and stuff, racks for gardening clothes etc., plus the heat pump that provides warm water and heats the house.
A foldable ironing board is also there, but those of you who have read my blog for a longer time know that it's not much in use. I refuse to spend my Saturday evenings by the washer like my mother used to do - I do the laundry in our house, but the washer can do the job without my presence. I put the clothes in, then later pick them out and sort them in the living room, watching tv at the same time. I take them out to dry or put them on the racks, but I'm glad not to have a separate room for this task, away from the family. If I'm in mood for ironing (not too often), I put the board in front of the tv. Of course, it wouldn't have to be me who stays in the laundry room, but why should anyone?
There can't be very many people who haven't seen the tv show Love It Or List It. Those families must always have open concept, huge kitchen island, lots of storage space, walk-in-closets, and of course, rather more bathrooms than family members. Who cleans all those baths? Do the couples brush their teeth holding hands, because a master bedroom must have a bathroom with two sinks? Why not two toilets next to each other, while you're at it? Who can relax in a bath in the ensuite, knowing that the kids are fooling around somewhere in the house? We have one bathroom, located next to the living room and kitchen, and I could wash my hair in the mornings and yet hear what was happening elsewhere in the house with the kids doing their morning routine. The bedroom picture represents spa-concept, white and wooden colours, bathroom within the bedroom. I can picture the idea of shared bubble baths, or having a shower before a romantic moment. But notice also the toilet next to the bath, separated from the bed only by a glass wall - these spouses share literally everything.
~~~~~~~~~~
Kun on puhe kodista ja asumisesta, tähtään helppouteen. Ei huollettavia koristeita, puutarhanhoitoa tai turhaa siivottavaa, kiitos. Nyt kerron pari muuta epäkäytännöllistä juttua, joita mieluummin vältän.
☆☆☆
Tietenkin musta teemavärinä. Se ei vain pienennä tilaa ja ime valoa, vaan myös korostaa sormenjälkiä, pölyä ja kaikkea, mitä tasoille kertyy. Liika musta saa olohuoneen näyttämään kauhufilmin lavasteelta - usko pois, googlasin aika paljon ennen kuin löysin ei-pelottavan kuvan mustasta olohuoneesta. Muissa huoneissa se on vielä pahempi, musta makuuhuone on pelottava ja musta keittiö kaipaa siivoojan käyntiä joka päivä.
☆☆☆
Seuraavan kuvan olohuone on viihtyisä ja kaunis, mutta minä näen ongelmia. Matto näyttää siltä, että se on hankala imuroida. Kevyet pöydät voi siirtää siivotessa, mutta jos kissat eivät pudota vaasia, se kaatuu joka kerta, kun oikaiset jalkasi pöydälle. (Ja vaasi on tiellä, jos katsot teeveetä tuolissa istuen.) Tyynyt ovat kivoja, mutta meillä ne päätyisivät ensin lattialle ja sitten komeroon, kun olisin pöyhinyt ja järjestellyt ne noin viisi kertaa. Entä sitten viltti - pehmeä, söpö ja mukava, kun asettelet sen sohvalle. Mutta ennemmin tai myöhemmin siihen kaatuu kahvia tai tippuu ruokaa, vetoketju (tai kissan kynnet) takertuu ja tekee reikiä, muutaman kuukauden päästä se ei enää ole niin kaunis - ja jo paljon aiemmin olet saanut tarpeeksesi sen oikomisesta ja asettelusta joka kerta kun nouset sohvalta. Olohuone on elämistä ja rentoutumista varten, ei jatkuva sisustustyö.
☆☆☆
Mitäs vikaa on mukavassa valko-harmaassa keittiössä? Periaatteessa se on ok. Mutta kuvassa on yksi asia, jota keittiösuunnittelijat eivät tunnu tajuavan, päätellen siitä miten paljon sitä näkee: taustalla näkyvä ovi johtaa luultavasti kylpyhuoneeseen, saunaosastolle ja/tai talon takaovelle. Kuvittele itsesi kokkaamassa ja kattamassa pöytää, ja muu perhe kulkemassa edestakaisin, ehkä joku tulossa sisään kuraeteisen kautta pikkulasten tai parin koiran kanssa. Pieni asia, mutta jatkuva harmi, jonka voisi välttää.
☆☆☆
Entä toinen moderni ja kaunis keittiö, ei kai siinä ole mitään vikaa? Katso tarkemmin. Mikro on aivan liian korkealla, vain pitkä ihminen saa kuuman keittokulhon turvallisesti alas. Saareke ei oikein palvele mitään tarkoitusta, paitsi että toisella puolella on varmaan kaappeja tai laatikoita. Korkeat tuolit ovat aikuisille epämukavat ja lapsille vaaralliset. Ja pahin vika käytännöllisyyden kannalta: kun katat pöydän ateriaa varten, mistä otat tavaraa? Jep, jääkaapista. Kiertelet isoa saareketta joka päivä, kantaen ruokaa ja juomaa, ja sitten viet likaiset astiat tiskikoneeseen joka lienee pesualtaan vieressä, yllätys: kierrät taas saarekkeen. Miksi näitä saarekkeita tungetaan joka paikkaan, kun sama säilytystila ja taso voisi olla seinän vieressä, tai jossain missä se ei ole tiellä? Meillä menisi muutama viikko ja sitten joka ateria syötäisiin teeveen edessä - kun kuitenkin täytät lautasen jääkaapin ovella, sen voi saman tien kantaa olohuoneeseen asti.
☆☆☆
Sitten kodinhoitohuone, tila pyykkäystä, silitystä ja muuta kodinhoitoa varten. Kuvan huone on kivan näköinen, mutta ei kovin kätevä. En näe missä likapyykkiä pidetään - toivottavasti ei kassissa, tai hyllyjen pienissä koreissa? Taso on kaunis, mutta ei hyvä silittämiseen, ja pienet kaapit eivät tuo paljon säilytystilaa, niihin mahtuu ehkä siivoustuotteita. Joissakin taloissa on isot pyykkituvat, mutta sekin on aika turhaa - käytän neliöt mieluummin oleskeluun kuin pyykin viikkaamiseen.
☆☆☆
Mikä sitten on minun ratkaisuni - ei mitään "huonetta"! Meillä on kylpyhuoneen ja saunan vieressä tila, jossa on pyykkikorit ja pesukone. Tila on pieni käytävä, ja siinä on myös kissojen hiekkalaatikko, taitettavat pyykkitelineet, kaappitilaa pyyhkeille ja siivoustavaroille, naulakko puutarhatyö- ja muille huonoille vaatteille, sekä ilmalämpöpumppu, joka tuottaa lämpimän veden ja lämmittää talon.
☆☆☆
Siellä on myös silityslauta, mutta blogia pitempään lukeneet tietävät, että se pääsee vähällä. Kieltäydyn viettämästä lauantai-iltoja pesukoneen vieressä, kuten äitini tapasi tehdä - minä hoidan meillä pyykit, mutta kone osaa tehdä työnsä ilman minun läsnäoloani. Laitan vaatteet sisään, otan ne myöhemmin pois, ja lajittelen olohuoneessa teeveetä katsellen. Vien pyykit ulos kuivumaan tai levitän ne telineille, mutta koskaan en ole kaivannut tätä varten erillistä tilaa, erossa muusta perheestä. Jos huvittaa silittää (yleensä ei), laitan silityslaudan teeveen eteen. Tietenkään juuri minun ei tarvitsisi olla kodinhoitohuoneessa, mutta miksi kenenkään pitäisi?
☆☆☆
Kovin moni ei ole voinut välttyä näkemästä sarjaa Remppa vai muutto. Perheiden pitää aina saada avoin pohjaratkaisu, valtava keittiösaareke, paljon säilytystilaa, vaatehuoneita, ja tietysti enemmän kylpyhuoneita kuin perheenjäseniä. Kuka ne kaikki siivoaa? Pesevätkö pariskunnat hampaansa käsi kädessä, kun päämakuuhuoneen kylppärissä täytyy aina olla kaksi pesuallasta? Kas kun ei saman tien kaksi pönttöä vierekkäin, kun kerran rempataan? Kuka pystyy rentoutumaan ikioman kylppärin ammeessa, kun lapset riehuvat jossain päin taloa? Meillä on yksi kylpyhuone, keittiön ja olohuoneen vieressä, ja oli kiva kun voin aamulla pestä hiukseni ja silti kuulla mitä tapahtui muualla talossa, kun lapset tekivät aamutoimiaan. Kylpyhuonekuva edustaa kylpylätyyliä, valkoista ja puun sävyjä, kylpyhuone makuuhuoneessa. Voin hahmottaa idean yhteisestä vaahtokylvystä tai suihkusta ennen romanttista hetkeä. Mutta huomaa myös ammeen vieressä oleva vessanpönttö, jonka erottaa sängystä vain lasiseinä - nämä puolisot jakavat kirjaimellisesti aivan kaiken.
Colourful or clinic white?
Beauty has always been a question of taste, and this goes also for decoration. What's stylish today, is aged and too common in ten years. Retro is hot these days, but those of us who lived the original decade, may not totally agree, either.
This home was presented in a magazine as an example of perfect 1970's style - no such thing as too much colours, patterns or things! Some of my friends really lived in houses looking very much like that - I can appreciate the effort, but that's not for me, anymore.
My home economy book's cover presents a kitchen much like this. Look at all that yellow, brown and red - natural, bright colours were pop, and I bet that the same house's living room was green and orange. My parents built their house 1978, with bright grass green living room, orange kitchen, pink toilet and master bedroom in sort of orange-brown and very dark green. I'm still grateful someone had sense to make the bathroom white and build the sauna with natural wooden colours.
My room looked a bit like this. I had to really put my foot down to get the walls painted light green - I had preferred white or some very light pastel colour, but I gave up with that when the adults accepted not painting one wall with a dark "effect colour". That was the state of the art in the late 1970's, and I was terribly old-fashioned when I wouldn't have it, no matter what they said.
Our bathroom was ok, but visiting friends you could meet an orange toilet, cherry red or purple sink, green tiles - and the best, all of them in the same place! My parents' house has been redecorated later on, and everything else is gone except for the pink toilet walls. My mother can't understand what went into her when painting those rooms, but it just was fashionable those days.
There was also another one, even worse thing that was hot in the 1970-1980's - huge wallpaper patterns, with of course, bright colours. Fortunately, this didn't lure my parents, but I could still have nightmares remembering some bedroom walls at my friends' places, with huge flowers and plants, and lots colours so that you hardly saw the furniture for the walls.
Bright colours have been back for long, this green interior is from a new school building.
This orange wonderland gives me headache, and it's also from a new school.
The two previous pictures and this very modern building remind me of the school I went to as teenager - a rhapsody in dark blue, bright yellow and orange, chocolate brown, pink, purple and christmas red, mixed with ten shades of green. Apparently children need strong colours, but I'm surely not the only one who decided to never have such colours when I get to choose.
When my age group started decorating our own homes, the trend turned more and more to white - a young adult wants to have something very different compared with the childhood home. Everything went white, then the next decade's new adults wanted to have big patterns and lots of colours, because they didn't remember the 1970's. Now we live in the era of white, grey and black.
I won't even try to guess what the next trend will be like, but you won't see me redecorating in the latest fashion. Unless it's the 1990's peaceful combination of different shades of white and light wooden colours - in that case, count me in. My brother once said that all our homes start to look like each other sooner or later, and he is absolutely right. When I read home magazines or choose wallpapers and carpets, I go for colours like cream, birch, nougat, light grey, seasoned with a glimpse of light blue, turquoise or rose. Call me old-fashioned, but those are the colours of my twenties, and I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for that style. My mother-in-law's living room hasn't essentially changed since 1996, but it is practical, homey and comforting. No need to fix what ain't broken!
~~~~~~~~~~~~
☆☆☆
Minun huoneeni tyyli muistutti seuraavaa kuvaa.
☆☆☆
Kirkkaat värit palasivat jo aikoja sitten, seuraavan kuvan tummanvihreä sisustus on uudesta koulurakennuksesta, samoin päänsärkyä aiheuttava oranssi ihmemaa.
☆☆☆

Music makes the world go' round

This time, I'll discuss a few of my favourite music artists. We begin with a band that was one of the biggest ever, until it's frontman was taken away far too early. Many famous singers have died young, but I'm talking about the man, the myth, the legend - Freddie Mercury who died in 1991.
These four nice chaps aka Queen filled stadiums and concert fields in the 1980's (one night 250000 people), and they still are one of the best selling music artists. They can be called a rock band, but their music is a mixture of hard rock, glam and progressive rock, spiced with classical influence. Freddie's special, recognisable voice and Brian May's guitar, with songs that are all masterpieces in their own right, make a unique combination, and drummer Roger Taylor and bassist John Deacon finish the experience. Unfortunately I never saw Freddie on stage, but Adam Lambert made a respectful tribute to him on tour in Helsinki 2018. If you're not familiar with Queen, try and begin with Innuendo, It's a Kind of Magic or Another One Bites The Dust. You can't have missed We Are The Champions, if you live on Earth.

You know what Robbie Williams looks like, so no picture of him. I was never a fan of Take That, but I really like Robbie's solo career performances. I usually hate arrogance, also in artists, but Freddie Mercury could afford it (and was simultaneously shy, strutting around was a role he put on), and Robbie has the same endearing attitude - look, Mom, I'm here on stage! In his prime, he had 125000 people under his feet in Knebworth, three nights in a row. I loved how he took the crowd's applause, smiling self-ironically "it's just me, but you love me". His music may not be as diverse and multi-layered as Queen's, but it's catchy, beautiful and well-made, and his voice is also kind of distinctive and special. To get to know Robbie's music, I suggest Let Me Entertain You, She's Madonna, Me and My Shadow or Swings Both Ways.
Next choice is the Swedish GES, according to themselves a sporadically existing group.  Their biggest heyday was in the middle of the 1990's, then they had a pause to return shortly in the beginning of 2000, and made re-return in 2017 with sold out performances, and a full tour in summer 2018. I have loved them since the 1990's, and they still rocked the middle-aged audience when I was there - even my husband was impressed though he has joked about "my" Swedes for 25 years. Anders Glenmark, Thomas "Orup" Eriksson and Niklas Strömstedt (see where GES comes from?) also have their own careers as musicians, song-writers and producers, but together they are magical. You can start with Hon är min, Stanna världen en stund and Den andra kvinnan, but my new favourite is När jag var han, remake of another artist's song for the tv show Så mycket bättre (reality show The Best Singers, in Finland Vain elämää).
GES call themselves the oldest boy band in the world, but the true holder of that title is Deep Purple. They started 1968, had a pause for 8 years and started again 1984, and are still going strong. The assembly has changed forth and back, drummer Ian Paice was in the original line up, bassist Roger Glover and singer Ian Gillan came along in 1969. The current squad has been together the longest, guitarist Steve Morse came 1994 and keyboardist Don Airey 2002. In 50+ years, the band has made progressive hard rock, playing with blues, classical and psychedelic impressions - as Roger Glover said in an interview, DP was never meant to be (only) a heavy metal band. I wasted most of my life only knowing that the band existed, but when I finally saw them in 2017, it was like a religious experience. I saw them also 2018, and I do hope for one more chance, considering the pandemic and the gentlemen's age. You could try All I Got Is You, All The Time In The World, Throw My Bones or Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming ❤, or anything from their 21 studio albums.
In the end a quote from Ian Gillan, from the time when records and record shops still tried to compete with legal and illegal streaming. I buy my music online and have Spotify, but despite of my best efforts, Ian hasn't showed up at my mother's house or mine 🤔😳😊😍.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Nyt kerron muutamasta suosikkiartististani. Aloitetaan bändistä, joka oli yksi kaikkien aikojen suurimmista, kunnes sen keulakuva lähti aivan liian varhain. Monet laulajat ovat kuolleet nuorena, mutta tämä mies, myytti ja legenda tunnettiin nimellä Freddie Mercury ja hän kuoli 1991.
☆☆☆
Kuvan neljä mukavaa kaveria eli Queen täytti stadioneita ja konserttialueita 1980-luvulla (250000 yhtenä iltana), ja he kuuluvat yhä kaikkien aikojen myydyimpien musiikkiartistien joukkoon. Queen on rock, mutta sen musiikki on sekoitus hard rockia, glamouria ja progea, maustettuna klassisen musiikin vaikutteilla. Freddien erityinen, tunnistettava ääni, Brian Mayn kitara ja mestarilliset kappaleet luovat ainutlaatuisen kokonaisuuden, ja rumpali Roger Taylor sekä basisti John Deacon täydentävät kokemuksen. Ikävä kyllä en koskaan nähnyt Freddietä lavalla, mutta Adam Lambert teki hänelle hienosti kunniaa Helsingin keikalla 2017. Jos Queen ei ole sinulle tuttu, kuntele Innuendo, It's A Kind Of Magic tai Another One Bites The Dust. We Are The Championsia et ole voinut missata, jos asut Maa-planeetalla.
☆☆☆
Tiedät kyllä miltä Robbie Williams näyttää, joten hänestä ei ole lähikuvaa. En ollut Take That -fani, mutta pidän Robbien soolouran esityksistä. Yleensä inhoan ylimielisyyttä, myös artisteissa, mutta Freddie Mercuryllä oli siihen varaa (ja hän oli silti ujo, kukkoilu oli vain rooli), ja Robbiella on sama hellyttävä asenne - katso, äiti, minä olen täällä lavalla!  Huikeimmillaan Knebworthissä 125000 ihmistä palvoi maata hänen jalkojensa alla, kolme iltaa peräkkäin. Hän kuittasi taputukset, hymyillen itseironisesti "minä se vain olen, kiva kun tykkäätte". Robbien musiikki ei ole yhtä monisyistä ja -kerroksista kuin Queenin, mutta se on tarttuvaa, kaunista ja hyvin tehtyä, ja myös hänen äänensä on tietyllä tapaa erottuva. Ehdotan kuunteluun Let Me Entertain You, She's Madonna, Me and My Shadow tai Swings Both Ways.
☆☆☆
Seuraavaksi esittelyyn tulee ruotsalainen GES, omien sanojensa mukaan ajoittaisesti olemassaoleva yhtye. Heidän huippuaikansa oli 1990-luvun puolivälissä, sitten tuli lyhyt paluu 2000-luvun alussa ja uusi paluu 2017, loppuunmyydyin esityksin, ja täysi kiertue 2018. Olen pitänyt heistä 1990-luvulta asti, ja keski-ikäinen yleisö rokkasi aivan kuin silloin ennen kun viimein näin heidät keikalla - jopa mies innostui, vaikka on 25 vuotta vinoillut "minun" ruotsalaisistani. Anders Glenmark, Thomas "Orup" Eriksson ja Niklas Strömstedt (näetkö mistä GES tulee?) ovat kaikki luoneet pitkän uran muusikoina, lauluntekijöitä ja tuottajina, mutta yhdessä he ovat maagisia. Tutustumiseen suosittelen vaikkapa kappaleita Hon är min, Stanna världen en stund ja Den andra kvinnan, mutta uusin suosikkini on När jag var han, Ruotsin Vain elämää - tv-sarjaan tehty uusintaversio toisen artistin kappaleesta.
☆☆☆
GES kutsuu itseään maailman vanhimmaksi poikabändiksi, mutta tittelin todellinen haltija on Deep Purple. He aloittivat 1968, olivat 8 vuotta tauolla ja aloittivat uudelleen 1984, ja aina vain menee lujaa. Kokoonpano on muuttunut monesti, rumpali Ian Paice on alkuperäisestä ryhmästä, basisti Roger Glover ja laulaja Ian Gillan tulivat mukaan jo 1969. Nykyinen tiimi on kaikkein pitkäikäisin, kitaristi Steve Morse tuli 1994 ja kosketinsoittaja Don Airey 2002. Bändi on tehnyt progressiivista rokkia yli 50 vuotta, leikitellen bluesin, klassisen musiikin ja psykedeelisen rokin vaikutteilla - kuten Roger Glover totesi haastattelussa, Deep Purplen ei koskaan pitänyt olla (vain) heavybändi. Hukkasin ison osan elämästäni, kun vain tiesin että bändi on olemassa, ja kun viimein näin heidät livenä 2017, se oli kuin uskonnollinen kokemus. Olin keikalla myös 2018, ja nyt voi vain toivoa vielä yhtä mahdollisuutta, kun huomioi pandemian ja herrojen korkean iän. Kokeile kuunnella All The Time In The World, All I Got Is You, Throw My Bones, Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming tai mikä tahansa 21 studioalbumin kappaleista.
☆☆☆
Lopuksi lainaus Ian Gillanilta, ajalta jolloin levyt ja levykaupat vielä yrittivät kilpailla laillisen ja laittoman striimauksen kanssa: "Osta oikeita levyjä, oikeista kaupoista, tai tulen kotiisi ja huudan äidillesi". Ostan musiikkini verkosta ja käytän Spotifyta, mutta hyvistä yrityksistäni huolimatta Ian ei ole tullut käymään äitini luona eikä myöskään meillä 🤔😳😊😍.
Procrastinative, lazy or proceedingly challenged? Cleaning doesn't bring joy.
Don't get me wrong, I do like a clean house and back in the day, I was known as the one who straightened paintings on the wall and carpet fringe even when visiting. But lately I have noticed changes - I do see the dust balls and cat hair on the floor, but they bother me less and less when the years go by.
I do the dishes (dishwasher, mostly) and the laundry regularly, but everything else happens with delays - have I become lazy, old or am I a procrastinator, the new pompous word for a person who won't do today the thing that can be left undone even tomorrow? Of course it's not that important, no-one has regretted on their death bed that they didn't clean more often. But it's sociologically interesting to ask, what changed?
I'm 52 and grew up in a world where cleaning was definitely women's work. Sometimes when my father was laid off from his job and mother was working, he would beat the rugs and vacuum the house, but I never saw him wiping the dust or cleaning the toilets. Today it sounds medieval if you admit to some gender-based division, and I made sure that all my kids know how to change and wash sheets, clean the house and do the dishes, because everyone eats and lives somewhere. But my husband and I believe in practicality: he's better in ploughing the snow and driving the lawn mower - I have zero interest in these, but I rather do the laundry and most of the cleaning. He does most of the cooking and grocery shopping, I clean the kitchen and all in all it's divided pretty well.
But back to the cleaning. We have bought several new vacuums within a few years - they always seem good at the shop, but when you use them for real, problems arise. Either they are ineffective or the other way around, it's difficult to get them off the rugs. The chord is too short or won't go back inside, the accessories are useless, the sound too loud, the wheels get stuck everywhere and the whole thing is just too heavy to drag around. And don't recommend built-in vacuum cleaners, many people have told me they have their downsides, too. The vacuums we bought haven't been very cheap, either, because I thought that money could buy quality and userfriendliness. The latest one has stayed a bit longer because I can live with it, but just barely - no love lost here.
The idea of a robot cleaner has intrigued me for decades (as a keen scifi-reader), and a couple of years ago I just had to try and buy a cheap model for testing. But it was a disappointment, it did go back and forth in the kitchen but skipped the corners and got stuck behind chairs. Or am I just a spoiled brat, who should be grateful I don't need to use an old school broom? We still haven't introduced the robot to our cats, maybe they would love to ride it like I've seen in memes 🤔😄😺.
Maybe I have finally reached the age when I can break free from my childhood beliefs, and know that my value as woman and human being has nothing to do with how thoroughly and often I clean the toilets. On the other hand, it's been proven that a certain amount of dirt increases immunity. Thus I protect my family from exceeding cleanliness, making sure that they have a strong immune system. Pandemic sets now certain preconditions, but in general, it's better to not live in a completely germ-free environment. So I'll live and love more, wash and wipe less 😄❤! If it bothers someone, they can come and clean my home.
~~~~~~~~~~
☆☆☆

To err is human

One characteristics brings together all mankind - we are good at blaming others for our failures. I might be a PhD if my professor hadn't insisted on researching certain aspects of his own interest points. My husband could have been a professional hockey player if his parents had lived closer to the rink. - Or you can just admit that it wasn't your thing, and that fate actually knew better what was right for you 😊.
"Fake it till you make it" means that you can pretend being competent and confident, put on a role and keep going, until you actually become that person. Sometimes the learning goes the hard way, through mistakes, but it is also the most effective way. Unfortunately, some people never learn and keep doing the same thing, but still expect different results.
There's no need to be afraid of mistakes. Penicillin was found because mold was developped on microbial culture that was accidentally contaminated. Thinking outside the box may lead to big failures, but also open new ways and possibilities, that wouldn't exist if no-one ever tried new things. Even though Einstein said after Hiroshima bombing that he should have become a clocksmith, his work provided much more than nuclear bombs.
Mistakes can be necessary steps that lead to the solution in the end. If you fail, you can say that you just tested a theory - that's the scientific way. I tested a new hairdo for 15 months ago, and now I can say that I'm not that kind of person. I have also tested not cleaning the house for a month, and observed that a) it won't clean itself, b) the mess truly bothered me and c) the husband has a lot higher tolerance to dirt than I. Conclusion: we must find the optimal cleaning cycle that balances the line between our cleanliness expectations.
Finnish proverb says 'yrittänyttä ei laiteta'. It can be understood that if you tried, it's ok, and you can't be blamed afterwards. If you want to learn to water ski, maybe you can if you try really hard. Or if not, you can tell that you would have been very talented, but the sun was too blinding and actually you had a little tummyache, too. But on a cloudy day and with a healthy stomach, you'd astonish everyone.
It is human to err -  poet Alexander Pope pointed out in the 1700's that mistakes should be forgiven, because humans are not perfect, and forgiveness is a divine quality. The more modern era has created several alternate endings to the phrase, such as that to really foul things up you need a computer - for example, nowadays you can accidentally send the same stupid e-mail to hundreds of people, whereas in the old times you would have given a handwritten note to a colleague. Some people are also willing to tramp on other people to succeed in life, and they blame others for their own mistakes - sadly, in the modern worklife this can actually be seen as good management. But the oldest quote about human mistakes is by Cicero and everyone should remember it: "To err is human, but only a fool persists in error."
~~~~~~~~~
Yksi ihmiskuntaa yhdistävä tekijä on, että olemme hyviä syyttämään muita omista virheistämme. Minä voisin olla filosofian tohtori, jos professori ei olisi tyrkyttänyt tutkimusaiheeksi omia mielenkiinnon kohteitaan. Mieheni voisi olla ammattijääkiekkoilija, jos hänen vanhempansa olisivat asuneet lähempänä jäähallia. - Tai sitten voi vain myöntää, että se ei ollut minun juttuni, kohtalo osasi valita oikean suunnan.
☆☆☆
Sanonta "teeskentele, kunnes menestyt" tarkoittaa, että esität pätevää ja varmaa, puet päällesi roolin ja jatkat sitä, kunnes oikeasti osaat asian. Joskus oppiminen tapahtuu vaikeaa tietä, erehdyksien kautta, mutta se on myös tehokkain tapa. Valitettavasti on myös ihmisiä, jotka eivät koskaan opi, vaan tekevät yhä uudelleen samoja asioita, ihmetellen miksi lopputulos ei muutu sen paremmaksi.
☆☆☆
Virheitä ei kannata pelätä. Penisilliini keksittiin, kun bakteeriviljelmä saastui vahingossa ja siihen kasvoi hometta. Uudenlainen ajattelu voi aiheuttaa mahtavia mokia, mutta myös avata uusia tapoja ja mahdollisuuksia, joita ei synny ilman että joku yrittää jotain uutta. Einstein totesi Hiroshiman pommin jälkeen, että olisi pitänyt ryhtyä kellosepäksi, mutta hänen työnsä tuloksena syntyi paljon muutakin kuin atomipommi.
☆☆☆
Virheet voivat olla tarpeellisia askelia tiellä kohti ratkaisua. Jos mokaa, aina voi sanoa, että testasi teoriaa - se on myös tieteen tapa. Minä kokeilin uutta kampausta 15 kk sitten, ja nyt voin kokemuksesta todeta, että en ollut sen mallin ihminen. Olen myös kokeillut mm. olla siivoamatta kuukauteen, ja totesin että a) talo ei siivoa itse itseään, b) sotku tosiaan häiritsee minua ja c) miehellä on selvästi korkeampi toleranssi lian suhteen. Lopputulema on, että meidän täytyy etsiä optimaalinen siivousrytmi, joka tasapainoilee kummankin puhtausodotuksien rajamailla.
☆☆☆
Sananlasku toteaa, että yrittänyttä ei laiteta. Sen voi ymmärtää niin, että kun on kokeillut, se riittää, eikä ketään tarvitse syyllistää jälkeen päin. Jos haluaa oppia vesihiihtoa, siitä vain yrittämään kovasti. Jos ei onnistu, voi sanoa että lahjoja olisi kyllä ollut, mutta aurinko häikäisi ja masukin oli vähän kipeä - pilvisenä päivänä ja terveellä vatsalla olisit huikean hyvä.
☆☆☆
Erehtyminen on inhimillistä - runoilija Alexander Pope huomautti 1700-luvulla, että vahingot pitäisi antaa anteeksi, koska ihmiset eivät ole täydellisiä, ja anteeksianto on jumalallinen kyky. Nykyaika on kehittänyt sanonnalle monta vaihtoehtoista loppua, mm. että tosimokan tekemiseen tarvitaan tietokone - nykyään voit vaikkapa lähettää saman tyhmän sähköpostin vahingossa sadoille ihmisille, kun entisaikoina olisit antanut käsin kirjoitetun lapun työkaverille. Jotkut ovat kuitenkin valmiita polkemaan muita oman menestyksensä eteen, ja siirtävät virheensä muiden syyksi - ikävä kyllä, nykyajan työelämässä tämä on joidenkin mielestä hyvää johtamista. Vanhin sitaatti virheiden inhimillisyydestä on kuitenkin Cicerolta, ja se kannattaa jokaisen muistaa: "Erehtyminen on inhimillistä, mutta vain hölmö toistaa samoja virheitä."
School and work at home
My daughter's school was closed for three weeks and she's homeschooling, and I have worked from home for about a year now. When homeschool started, of course I had several meetings and phone calls with my colleagues, and she had Meet-appointments with the class.
The feeling when you're trying to count a person's yearly income (I grant loans for living), and you hear "What is Nachmittag?". She studies English, Swedish and German, and sometimes we both mix the languages, use wrong words or translate into wrong language. "How do you say X in English", and as a person educated as translator, I always answer "Tell me the whole sentence".
It gets really interesting when it's time for maths class. Though I work in a bank, maths has bever been my thing - I do manage percents, but everything else goes way over my head. Fractions, mixed numbers, equations, trigonometric funktions - help! In the bank, we do have computers and software that do the math, we tellers count simple things like the loan value of a house or compare customers' debt payments to their monthly income.
A couple of days ago I overheard the history teacher tell how Vietnam was the first tv war - they have finished with the WW2 and are getting closer to our times. Sadly, today's teenagers will have their own wartime memories to tell, about a world war against an infectious disease.
I have already demonstrated my skills by sawing a cardboard box in two - the art task was to create a storage box for magazines etc. with recycled material. I'm a bit scared to think what will come along when they have crafts - I hope that the teacher doesn't expect the homes to have yarn, knitting needles in all sizes, or fabrics and a sewing machine (which we do have, actually).
It's really nice that now also our university student came home, when her boyfriend is studying abroad. But with one remoteworker, two homeschoolers and two cats, the house gets a bit crowded at times. In one bedroom we have the junior high, in another the university, and the third bedroom serves occasionally as the phone booth. We have the open concept living space that everyone wants in the renovation shows, and now the bank is in one corner of the living room, rest break area in another corner, and the cafeteria at the other end.
I keep my normal working hours and the younger daughter follows her curriculum - at the university there's the academic freedom, but we still try to have lunch break together and the girls also share an afternoon snack. The cats may come to the "cafeteria" and eat when we are there, but otherwise they focus on choosing between the best warm places to sleep or just judging us. You know how cats look, half asleep, with slanted eyes, preferably lying where they are most in the way.
You know the saying that when the war has been going on for long enough, it starts to feel like an old acquaintance? I have got used to working from home, but after a whole year I do think it would be nice to go back to the office and meet people, just for a change. The younger daughter likes being at home, but if it was for much longer than a few weeks, I bet she'd get bored and miss her friends. The university student has spent a year in her apartment, watching recorded lectures, reading for exams and writing reports. She's totally ready to go back to classes, to meet friends and live like young people are supposed to. Let's hope that those times still come back some day, perhaps not like the old normal but at least the new normal with sensible precautions would be nice ❤👍😇.
~~~~~~~~~
☆☆☆
Matematiikan tunnilla homma menee mielenkiintoiseksi.
☆☆☆
Jokin aika sitten kuulin historianopettajan kertovan, että Vietnam oli ensimmäinen kunnolla televisioitu sota - Toinen maailmansota on kahlattu ja tullaan lähemmäs nykyhetkeä. Valitettavasti nykyajan teineillä on aikanaan omia sotamuistoja kerrottavaksi, he ovat kokeneet maailmansodan tartuntatautia vastaan.
☆☆☆

Technology for all ages

Older generations usually think that the younger ones are spoiled, childish and know nothing about life. The younger ones think that the elders don't understand technology. But whose technology are we talking about? I took my first it-lesson with a Commodore 64, which was an advanced computer at a time. I wrote my master's thesis with a computer that used floppy discs - needed many of them because you could only have 10-15 pages of text on each disk.
The first years of my working life were balancing between PC's and MacIntosh worlds, which were not compatible. During my adult years, I have learned to use VCR, CD, microwave, cell phone, digital camera, memory sticks, digital boxes, the ever-changing computer generations, smart phone models, social media and all kinds of apps, and it's just expanding. No-one knows what kind of technics we'll use in ten years from now, and after that, we can't even imagine.
Young people think 50+ are the boomers, but actually many in my generation understood the computer world better than the young - we had to know something about of how everything works, because the user interfaces were something completely else in our time. When you bought a device or a new program, you also got a huge handbook and had to do all kinds of tricks to be able to use them, because they didn't recognize each other the way the software does today, and the computer didn't take you through the process. The same goes for televisions, VCR's, digital boxes and all other equipment that needed settings or configurations.
The last time I bought a laptop, the young salesman looked sceptical because I didn't want to buy the initialization service. All my adult life I have done most of my work by a computer, and using them just gets easier when the software becomes more intelligent. I know nothing about programming, but neither do most of the young people, too - the technology is made for us, and you don't need to know how it works to be able to use it. As the science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke wisely pointed out: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."
Maybe I'm a stone age remain because I can't write with my thumbs, but I still know a thing or two about how to write a decent document, and can learn to use the latest social media gadget if I want to. If you are 20+, know this: the generation after you is going to find you just as technology-incompatible as you think about us before you, and the same will happen to them and their children. When the wheel was invented, I bet the elders thought it was an unnecessary gadget, and the young ones thought that the old ones wouldn't even know what to do with it. When you're middle-aged, the help desk will always think that your it-problem is a picnic error (problem in chair, not in computer). But technology should be an aid, not a problem, and thus they should just create device that take human limitations into account and prevent user errors.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Vanhemmat sukupolvet ajattelevat, että nuoret ovat hemmoteltuja ja lapsellisia, eivätkä tiedä mitään elämästä. Nuoret taas uskovat, että vanhemmat eivät tajua tekniikkaa. Mutta kenen teknologiasta puhutaan? Minä kävin ensimmäisen tietokonekurssini Commodore 64:llä, joka oli aikanaan edistyksellinen laite. Maisterintutkinnon pro gradu -työn kirjoitin koneella, joka käytti lerppuja - niitä piti olla monta, koska yhdelle mahtui vain 10-15 sivua tekstiä.
☆☆☆
Ensimmäiset vuodet työelämässä olivat tasapainoilua PC-koneiden ja MacIntoshin maailmojen välillä, jotka olivat täysin erillään. Aikuisikäni aikana olen opetellut käyttämään videonauhuria, cd-laitteita, mikroaaltouunia, kännykkää, digikameraa, muistitikkuja, digibokseja, vaihtuvia tietokonesukupolvia, älypuhelimia, somea ja vaikka mitä muita sovelluksia, ja lisää tulee koko ajan. Kukaan ei tiedä, millaista tekniikkaa käytämme kymmenen vuoden päästä, ja siitä eteenpäin ei osaa edes kuvitella.
☆☆☆
Nuorten mielestä yli viisikymppiset ovat boomereita, mutta todellisuudessa monet minun sukupolvestani tiesivät tietokoneista enemmän kuin nykyiset nuoret - meidän oli pakko ymmärtää jotain niiden toiminnasta, koska käyttöliittymät olivat jotain ihan muuta kuin nykyiset. Kun ostit uuden laitteen tai ohjelman, mukana tuli paksu käsikirja ja piti tehdä monenlaisia temppuja ennen kuin niitä voi käyttää, koska ne eivät tunnistaneet toisiaan niin kuin nykyiset ohjelmat, eikä kone neuvonut prosessin kulkua kuten nykyään. Sama pätee televisioihin, videoihin, digibokseihin ja kaikkiin laitteisiin, jotka tarvitsivat asetuksia tai yhteensovittamista muiden laitteiden kanssa.
☆☆☆
Kun viimeksi ostin läppärin, nuori miesmyyjä näytti epäileväiseltä, kun en halunnut ostaa käyttöönottopalvelua. Koko aikuisikäni olen tehnyt suurimman osan työstäni tietokoneella, ja niiden käyttö vain helpottuu, kun ohjelmista tulee älykkäämpiä. En tiedä mitään ohjelmoinnista, mutta ei tiedä suurin osa nuoristakaan - teknologia on ihmistä varten, ja sitä täytyy voida käyttää, vaikka ei tiedä miten se toimii. Tieteiskirjailija Arthur C. Clarke on sanonut sattuvasti: "Huipputekniikkaa on mahdoton erottaa taikuudesta."
☆☆☆
Olen ehkä kivikautinen jäänne, kun en osaa kirjoittaa pelkillä peukaloilla, mutta tiedän yhtä ja toista kunnollisen asiakirjan laatimisesta, ja voin opetella käyttämään uusinta somevillitystä jos haluan. Jos olet parikymppinen, muista tämä: sinun jälkeesi tuleva sukupolvi pitää sinua yhtä teknologia-yhteensopimattomana kuin sinä meitä edelläsi olevia, ja samoin tulee käymään heille ja heidän lapsilleen. Kun pyörä keksittiin, lyön vetoa, että se oli vanhojen mielestä turha kapine, ja nuoret sanoivat, että vanhat eivät edes osaisi käyttää sitä. Kun olet keski-ikäinen, help desk olettaa ilman muuta, että it-ongelmasi syynä on picnic-error (vika tuolissa, ei koneessa). Mutta teknologian pitäisi olla apuväline, ei ongelma, ja siksi pitäisi tehdä laitteita, jotka huomioivat inhimilliset rajoitukset ja ehkäisevät käyttäjästä johtuvien virheiden syntyä.
Happy Women's Day!
Today is the day when we celebrate International Women's Day. March the 8th has been women's day for more than 100 hundred years - first, it was connected with the socialist movement and communist countries, until the feminist movement started celebrating it 1967, and the UN 1977.
The idea is to celebrate women's social, economic, cultural and political achievements. At the same time, there are campaigns for female-focused charity objects and for raising awareness of gender equality. In 2021, the theme is challenged world: from challenge comes change. Women lead the fight against pandemic on many fronts. Now it's time to challenge gender stereotypes and bias, call out gendered assumptions, increase women's visibility, maintain gender equal mindset and raise awareness of discrimination.
The women's day is often a bit mistaken, as some people think we are celebrating the existence of women and feminity. If you buy roses and a box of chocolate for a wonderful woman near you, there's nothing wrong with that. But the idea is to notify what women are capable of, not put them on a pedestal. We don't need to worshipped, we want to be taken seriously. We can buy our own roses, when we get equal chances for education and at work. I can't think of one single job or task where you'd really need the male private parts, apart from the obvious thing they were made for. Men are often stronger, but as individuals we are all different - we all have our own talents, abilities and interests, and no gender is better than another.
You may also ask, do we still need a Women's Day? Many things are better than a hundred years ago, but there's a lot of work to be done yet. Just look at the recent abortion ban in Poland, the way some US politicians dream of going back to the 50's, or how the youngish female party leaders are treated when they lead Finland in pandemic - everything they do is wrong, but if it was middle-aged men, they'd be praised for their strong leadership, doing exactly the same. As long as a woman needs to be careful when walking home late at night, as long as teenage girls are catcalled or called whores at school, as long as men feel women "owe" them something - they won't take 'no' for an answer, but when you say you have a boyfriend they back off: a woman's no is not valid, but if she belongs to another (even imaginative) man, that counts. As long as these and a thousand other things are reality we need a Women's Day.
As Hillary Clinton pointed out in the 1990's, women's rights are human rights, and human rights are women's rights. The feminist movement used to work for gender equality, the same rights for women and men. But this also means that feminism is for everyone: all races and ages, cis, trans, asexual, bi, gay or lesbian, whatever your sexual preference is or where you exist on the gender scale, we are all humans and deserve to be treated the same way. But today the focus is on women: treat yourself and the women in your life with something nice, and remember that without women none of us would be here.
Tänään vietetään kansainvälistä naisten päivää. Maaliskuun 8. päivä on ollut omistettu naisille yli sata vuotta - aluksi se liitettiin sosialismiin ja kommunistimaihin, kunnes feministinen liike alkoi viettää päivää 1967, ja YK tuli mukaan 1977.
☆☆☆
Tarkoituksena on juhlistaa naisten yhteiskunnallisia, taloudellisia, kulttuurisia ja poliittisia saavutuksia. Samalla järjestetään kampanjoita naisiin liittyvien hyväntekeväisyyskohteiden puolesta ja pyritään lisäämään tietoisuutta sukupuolten tasa-arvosta. Vuonna 2021 teemana on maailma murroksessa: siitä syntyy muutos. Naiset johtavat pandemian vastaista taistelua monilla rintamilla. Nyt on aika haastaa sukupuolisteretypiat ja ennakkoluulot, tuoda julki sukupuolittuneet ennakko-odotukset, lisätä naisten näkyvyyttä, ajatella sukupuolten tasa-arvon mukaisesti ja lisätä tietoisuutta syrjinnästä.
☆☆☆
Naistenpäivä ymmärretään usein väärin, monet luulevat että juhlitaan naiseutta yleensä ja feminiinisyyttä. Jos ostat ruusuja ja suklaarasian ihanalle naiselle lähelläsi, siinä ei ole mitään pahaa. Mutta idea on huomata mihin naiset pystyvät, ei nostaa heitä jalustalle. Emme kaipaa palvontaa, vaan haluamme että meidät otetaan vakavasti. Voimme ostaa itse ruusumme, kun saamme tasa-arvoiset mahdollisuudet koulutuksessa ja työelämässä. En keksi yhtäkään työtä tai tehtävää, jossa todella tarvittaisiin miehen sukupuolielimiä, lukuunottamatta sitä yhtä mitä varten ne on luotu. Miehet ovat usein voimakkaampia, mutta yksilöinä olemme kaikki erilaisia - jokaisella on omat lahjansa, kykynsä ja kiinnostuksen kohteensa, eikä mikään sukupuoli ole toista parempi.
☆☆☆
Joku ehkä kysyy, tarvitaanko nyt enää naistenpäivää. Monet asiat ovat paremmin kuin sata vuotta sitten, mutta vielä on paljon tehtävää. Katsotaan vaikka Puolan tuoretta aborttikieltoa, sitä kuinka USA:n poliitikot haaveilevat paluusta 50-luvulle, tai kuinka nuorenpuoleisia puoluejohtajanaisia kohdellaan, kun he luotsaavat Suomea pandemian keskellä - kaikki mitä he tekevät on väärin, mutta jos kyseessä olisi keski-ikäiset miehet, he saisivat kehuja vahvasta johtajuudesta tekemällä samat asiat. Niin kauan kuin naisen pitää varoa kävellessään illalla kotiin, niin kauan kuin teinitytöille vislaillaan tai heitä huoritellaan koulussa, niin kauan kuin miesten mielestä nainen on heille jotakin velkaa - 'ei' ei kelpaa vastaukseksi, mutta jos nainen sanoo että hänellä on poikaystävä, mies perääntyy: naisen 'ei' ei päde, mutta jos nainen kuuluu toiselle (vaikka kuvitteelliselle) miehelle, se huomioidaan. Niin kauan kuin nämä ja tuhat muuta asiaa ovat todellisuutta, tarvitsemme naistenpäivää.
☆☆☆
Kuten Hillary Clinton huomautti 1990-luvulla, naisten oikeudet ovat ihmisoikeuksia, ja ihmisoikeudet ovat naisten oikeuksia. Feministinen liike ajoi alun perin sukupuolten tasa-arvoa, samoja oikeuksia naisille ja miehille. Mutta määritelmä tarkoittaa myös, että feminismi on kaikkien puolella: kaikki rodut ja ikäryhmät, perinteinen hetero, trans-,  a- tai biseksuaali, homo tai lesbo, riippumatta mikä sukupuolinen suuntauksesi on tai missä kohdassa sukupuolijatkumoa koet olevasi, olemme kaikki ihmisiä ja meitä kuuluu kohdella samalla tavalla. Mutta tänään huomio kohdistuu naisiin: hemmottele itseäsi ja elämäsi naisia jollakin mukavalla, ja muista että ilman naisia kukaan meistä ei olisi täällä.
Life after vaccinations
Most western countries have been able to start vaccinating people against covid-19. For example, my in-laws have got their first shots as father-in-law is over 80, and mother-in-law is his caretaker. My own mother, a few years younger, is still waiting for her turn.
Now when the virus has started changing, the pandemic becomes more and more dangerous for even younger people. My husband and I are both 50+, and at this age, most of us have already acquired some health issues, which means that we are more vulnerable to several diseases. Anyway, this is not the time to give up, but brace ourselves and keep going, because the vaccines mean there's light at the end of the tunnel.
Restrictions, remote work, homeschooling and not meeting people start getting on everyone's nerves, even if there are also good sides about staying home. If you stay in your little corona bubble, you can meet a couple of others who also stay in their own bubbles, and the amount of contacts is still very low. For example, my mother goes grocery shopping with a mask on once a week, and in addition to that, she meets regularly only one elderly person, who also lives alone. Following the rules is the best way to beat the pandemic and hopefully get back to somewhat normal life later on.
For those who think that the testing looks very unpleasant, I have good news: one person very close to me has already been tested three times, and she says it's not that awful - not pleasant, but tolerable. So if you get flu symptoms or others that seem like covid, get an appointment and have the test - better safe than sorry, and then you know what you need to do.
I have worked from home for almost a year now, and the best part is that I have more free time - no commuting, no ironing blouses, less haircare and fixing looks in general. When you can't invite people over, it doesn't really matter what your home looks like, either. So I get to read a lot more than before 😄👍. I'm a talkative person when in company, but I also like peace and quiet very much, and for me, these arrangements could go on for a long time. But I live with my husband and daughter and also get to meet a couple of other close relatives on a regular basis, so I don't get as lonely as people who live alone.
Quaranteening and staying home in the dead of the winter is deliberating in several ways: in 2019, couch potatoes were lazy and unsocial people. In pandemic, they are model citizens, a good example for everyone. Happy hibernating!
Useimmat länsimaat ovat päässeet aloittamaan koronarokotukset. Esimerkiksi appivanhempani saivat ensimmäiset pistokset, koska appiukko on jo 80-vuotias, ja anoppi on hänen omaishoitajansa. Oma äitini on muutaman vuoden nuorempi ja joutuu vielä odottamaan vuoroaan.
☆☆☆
Nyt kun virus on alkanut muuntua, pandemia on yhä vaarallisempi myös nuoremmille ikäluokille. Minä ja mieheni olemme molemmat 50+, ja tähän ikään mennessä useimmille on siunaantunut terveysongelmia, jotka tekevät meistä alttiimpia monille sairauksille. Mutta nyt ei ole aika antaa periksi, vaan terästäytyä, koska rokotteet merkitsevät valoa tunnelin päässä.
Rajoitukset, etätyö, kotikoulu ja se, ettei voi tavata ihmisiä alkavat käydä kaikkien hermoille, vaikka kotona olemisessa on myös hyvät puolensa. Jos pysyt omassa pienessä koronakuplassasi, voit tavata paria muuta, jotka myös elävät omissa kuplissaan, ja kontaktien määrä pysyy pienenä. Esimerkiksi äitini käy ruokakaupassa kerran viikossa maski päällä, ja sen lisäksi hän tapaa säännöllisesti yhtä ikäihmistä, joka myös asuu yksin. Sääntöjen noudattaminen on paras tapa kukistaa pandemia, ja päästä jossain vaiheessa takaisin suunnilleen normaaliin elämään.
☆☆☆
Jos joku ajattelee, että koronatesti näyttää kamalalta, hyviä uutisia: yksi hyvin läheinen ihminen on käynyt jo kolme kertaa, ja hän sanoo ettei se ole niin kauheaa - epämukavaa, mutta siedettävää. Niin että jos sinulla on flunssan oireita tai muuta koronaan sopivaa, varaa aika ja käy testissä - parempi katsoa kuin katua, ja sitten ainakin tietää miten pitää toimia.
☆☆☆
Olen tehnyt etätöitä kohta vuoden, ja parasta on, että vapaa-aikaa on enemmän - ei työmatkoja, ei puseroiden silitystä, vähemmän tukanlaittoa ja muuta ulkonäön fiksausta. Kun ei voi kutsua ketään käymään, ei ole väliä silläkään, miltä koti näyttää. Joten ehdin lukea paljon enemmän kuin ennen 😄👍! Seurassa olen puhelias ihminen, mutta arvostan myös rauhaa ja hiljaisuutta, ja minun puolestani nämä järjestelyt voisivat jatkua vielä pitkään. Mutta asunkin miehen ja tyttären kanssa ja tapaan paria muutakin läheistä säännöllisesti, joten olo ei käy yksinäiseksi kuten yksin asuvilla.
Karanteeni ja kotonaolo keskellä talvea on myös monella tapaa vapauttavaa: 2019 sohvaperunat olivat laiskoja ja epäsosiaalisia. Pandemian aikaan he ovat mallikansalaisia, hyvä esimerkki kaikille muille. Hyviä talviunia!
