Office work before, in and after pandemic

Before Mrs. 'Rona, office rats had been working in bigger and bigger shared spaces, because in the name of holy cost efficiency, everyone just got a table, chair, laptop and a headset for phone. Even bosses started losing their corner offices, and the little people sat in cubicles like the bees they are, hearing the colleague's every sigh, phone call, work problem, weekend plan and marital crisis.
The constant noise, even low-level, has subconscious effects on well-being. It's tiring to hear everything that happens around you and yet to concentrate on specialist tasks, being effective, capable and competent. You can try to block the environment out, but talk and people moving around create distraction and break your flow.
The bigger the office, the more interruptions. It's good to have nice colleagues and be able to talk a bit other things than work, but 15-20 or even more persons in the same space mean that there are several necessary, work-related conversations going on all the time, phone calls, printers buzzing and delivery persons coming and going, and sometimes you'd just want to get out.
People working in another line of work can't relate - eg. a factory can be a very loud place, but the work doesn't usually demand as much evaluation, decisions and focus as office work. Physical work can be very tiring, but you can often think whatever you like or perhaps chit-chat with a work mate. In an office, you must talk about the work issues, share information and ask for advice, but yet keep in mind that unnecessary noise can just drive someone crazy.
Then we got to know what it's like to live in interesting times - enter pandemic. In many countries, one third or even half the labour force was suddenly sent home with a laptop, even the ones who had always been told that they couldn't do remote work. The technical issues were solved surprisingly fast, and most companies and services took a digital jump that had otherwise taken ten years to accomplish. Introverts and people with long commute loved this, extroverts and those who live alone missed actually meeting people.
Maybe the hardest lot was being a parent with toddlers or kids on lower grades - daycare was restricted or shut down, and schools went for distance education overnight. Parents describe how they work from home, provide food, entertainment and constant help with school work, attend Teams or Zoom meetings with a whining toddler or a spouse without pants in the background. If both parents work from home they can take turns in care-shifts, but more important factors are the age and amount of children, living arrangements and what kind of work you do.
Unfortunately, the pandemic means also financial losses, lay offs and people getting fired. Offices are empty and yet the company must pay the rent and other costs, all in the while losing customers and deals, due to the situation. It's no wonder that the employers want to reduce the staff and be cost efficient, perhaps also let go of some of the office spaces - some companies decided even before the pandemic that some of the staff should always work remote, and thus they'd need less space in the actual office.
Once again, staff reduction negotiations are going on where I work. I do hope that my great team gets through these times safe and sound, and on the personal level I'm still willing to give my best if I'm wanted. Maybe in the future we can alternate between remote work and being physically at the office - no commuting means more free time and is ecological, but meeting people is also good for our mental health. Everyone should get to make their own decisions - some would come to the office every day, some could perhaps show up once or twice a week, and anything between. I love the peace and quiet in my home office, get done more thanks to less interruptions, and have more free time because the commuting takes almost 1,5 hours a day. It will be nice to meet people when we get back to more normal, but I'd still want to keep the obvious benefits of remote work available for as many as possible.

☆☆☆
Sitten saimme kokea, millaista on elää kiinnostavia aikoja - tuli pandemia.
☆☆☆
Omalla työpaikallani on taas kerran menossa yt-neuvottelut.

Mirror mirror on the wall

Pretty much everyone has heard of Snowwhite, Sleeping Beauty and other fairytale princesses, whose most important quality is their beauty. Little girls grow up with underlying expectations for female looks, and as grown women they are constantly determined by their appearance.
An old joke says that a woman must think like a man, act like a lady, look like a young girl and work like a horse - and of course, make it all look easy and gracious. Today, even men are more and more evaluated by their looks, but still an aged man with silver hair and is interesting and experienced, whereas a woman with the same looks is an old crone, and should do her best to look more appealing.
Even if you do your best, you can never win. Whether you wear make up not, the amount or style is never just right. Dyed hair or natural colour, someone has issues with that. Fashionable clothes, classic style or comfy outfit, you're over- or underdressed, too lazy or trying too much. For the world to be content with a woman's appearance, she should have the body of an olympic athlete (not too much muscle) and outfit, hair and make up of a royal princess (classy look), but yet she must look interesting and have found her own style.
Visible make up is often critisized as too much, but if you usually have a "natural" make up, your truly natural look makes people think you're sick. Many women say they feel better with make up on, and that's absolutely their choice. But if my natural face bothers you, don't look - with me, what you see is what you get.
I don't meet customers at work, so I don't see why anyone could tell me how to look - clean and combed should be enough for everyone. Occasionally I may feel like refreshing my looks a bit, but the decision is mine, not anyone else's. When it comes to my clothes and hair, I haven't even known for thirty years what is fashionable, and couldn't care less - clean, comfortable and low maintain level are the key words.
I'm rather remembered as a loving wife and mother, a good colleague, a nice person and a strong independent woman, than for my gorgeous looks. I want to be an able, real character and fight the dragons if need be, instead of being an ethereal beauty, a damsel in distress. I wish this goal will come naturally for the girls and boys in the future generations - and if they also want to be heroes that look great, it's completely ok, as long as it's their own choice.

The cats of my life

You know the saying that dogs have masters, but cats have staff. This is absolutely true, but it doesn't mean that one or the other would be a better pet - I love them both.
But now we're talking about cats. When I was a child, we didn't have any pets at first. But a neighbour had cats living in their cowshed, and after my Grandma started feeding them, they kind of moved to our empty barn and slept on the loft. We lived in small village with virtually no traffic and they had warm places for night, so it wasn't so bad though they were outdoor cats.
Taavi and Kaapo take it easy when i write.
I was at the university when my boyfriend and I discussed pets and thought it would be nice to have one. Since we were living in a 33m2 apartment, a big dog wasn't an option. So cat it was, and we got Kalle (actually, Charles the Great or Charlemagne, if you like). He was very beautiful, with grey-black stripes on the head and back, white belly and paws and green eyes. He was probably the most independent cat on earth - he did exactly what he wanted, hid for long times in that small apartment and then showed up to attack us in sleep, climbed the curtains and destroyed furniture. He could come and lie in your lap, purr and expect petting, and in the next second he was all teeth and claws. He scratched my arm only days before our wedding, so badly that I had to put on some foundation to cover the worst bruises, because I didn't want my crazy cat to be the main discussion theme at my wedding. He was still with us when our older kids were little, and somehow he understood not to scratch the small people, even though he'd still attack my feet from under the bed. But he taught us really well: you know how cat persons boast about their difficult cats - we are those people, thanks to Kalle.
Kalle napping in the walk-in closet.
Later on we moved to a house and let Kalle become an outdoor cat, and he loved mousehunting and the big yard. But then he was overrun by a car in front of our house, and we decided to have a new cat and never, ever let it wander outside, in the harm's way.
We thought that an indoor cat would like company, and so our new family members were kittens Mauno and Lempi, both black and white with grey-yellow eyes. Mauno was very social, he loved every single human he ever met and started purring immediately when someone walked in. He always wanted company and stayed with people, and didn't mind at all that our daughter carried him with her,  whereever she went in the house. Lempi was shy and rather kept to herself, but even she came to bed when Mauno was there, and if you sat on the couch they could both jump in your lap. Sadly, Lempi had a heart failure and passed away, only two years old.
Lempi and Mauno's favourite time of the day.
Of course Mauno needed a new friend, and this time we got Liinu, a blue-eyed young lady with white fur, with some black and orange spots. She didn't like humans at all and wanted to have as little contact as possible, but luckily she and Mauno got nicely along - he was sweet and welcoming, let her eat first and pick the toys she wanted, so they became friends pretty soon. But poor Mauno had really bad luck with his lady friends - about a year later Liinu became suddenly ill. She spent one night under the bed, turning and sounding restless, and though I called the vet early in the morning, the poor thing died on the way to the appointment. The vet found out that she had a contagious disease that couldn't have been treated. So Mauno was now a carrier, and couldn't meet any other cats as long as he would live. We were lucky in that Mauno lived ten more happy years after that, the only early effect was that he slowly became blind, but being an indoor cat for all his life, that didn't seem to bother him at all. He still loved everyone and welcomed one more human baby to the family - the more servants, the merrier. Finally when he was 13 years old, we started noticing that he didn't eat much and looked old, and it was time to let him go. We knew that we would have to be cat-less for five years to make sure that the disease was gone from our house, and I thought that after that time we wouldn't want another one anymore.
Mauno and Liinu sharing a kitchen chair.
Never say never. One spring I realised that the five years would be gone in the autumn, and when I had let the thought in my mind, it wouldn't go away. It took a few months to convince the husband, but the rest of the family was enthusiastic about having new cats.
So we went back to the same shelter where all our cats have come from. We wanted to have two boys who'd already be friends, and preferably some other coulouring than black and white. We were told about these orange twin brothers whose human had become allergic, and to her greatest sorrow had to give the boys away. And thus we became proud pawrents of Taavi and Kaapo. They took control of our household immediately like they had always been with us. To complete the cycle, not even these cats are very "catty" - as Kalle was a crazy adventurer, Mauno overwhelmingly loving and social, Lempi shy, and Liinu hated people, Taavi and Kaapo sometimes behave like dogs - they follow the human's every step, welcome everyone who walks in and even chase their tails (I've never seen cats do that). They are our babies and already spoiled rotten, we even built them a catio or "cathouse" because in their old home they had had a big balcony with safety net.
 The husband, who had to be talked into having new cats, feeds them, cleans the litter, picks the boys in his lap and hopes that they would sleep at his feet - but of course, the cats made their own decisions and took the youngest daughter's room as their own. To rephrase an old Finnish proverb, it's better to live under the paw than with no roof on your head - and to cat people, a cat is what makes a home cosy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sanotaan, että koirilla on isäntäväki, mutta kissoilla henkilökuntaa. Se on ihan totta, mutta kumpikaan ei ole toista parempi lemmikki, minä pidän molemmista. Mutta nyt puhutaan kissoista. Kun olin lapsi, meillä ei aluksi ollut mitään eläimiä. Mutta lähinaapurilla oli navettakissoja, ja kun isoäiti alkoi ruokkia niitä, ne muuttivat pikku hiljaa meidän latoon ja nukkuivat navetan ylisillä. Asuimme pikkukylässä, jossa oli tosi vähän liikennettä, ja kun kissoilla oli lämmin nukkumapaikka, ei ollut ollenkaan niin paha vaikka ne asuivat ulkona.
☆☆☆
Olin yliopistossa, kun mietimme poikaystävän kanssa, että lemmikki olisi kiva. Koska asuimme 33 neliön yksiössä, iso koira ei oikein ollut vaihtoehto. Joten kissa se täytyi olla, ja meille tuli Kalle (oikeastaan Kaarle Suuri, tai Charlemagne). Se oli kaunis kissa, vihreät silmät sekä harmaamustaraitainen pää ja selkä, valkoiset tassut ja alavartalo. Se oli myös maailman itsenäisin kissa - teki mitä halusi, piiloutui pitkiksi ajoiksi pienessä asunnossa ja ilmestyi sitten hyökätäkseen kimppuun kun nukuimme, kiipeili verhoihin ja tuhosi huonekaluja. Se saattoi tulla syliin, kehrätä ja odottaa paijausta, ja seuraavassa hetkessä olla pelkkiä kynsiä ja hampaita. Se muun muassa raapi käsivarteni vain vähän ennen meidän häitä niin pahasti, että meikkasin pahimmat jäljet piiloon, kun halusin että häissä puhutaan muustakin kuin meidän hullusta kissasta. Se oli meillä vielä kun isommat lapset olivat pieniä ja ymmärsi olla raapimatta pikkuihmisiä, vaikka hyökkäsi sängyn alta minun jalkoihini kuten aina. Mutta se koulutti meidät hyvin: kissaihmiset aina kehuskelevat hankalilla kissoillaan, ja me olemme juuri sellaisia - kiitos Kallen.
☆☆☆
Myöhemmin muutimme omaan taloon ja Kallesta tuli ulkokissa, ja se rakasti hiirijahtia ja isoa pihaa. Mutta se jäi auton alle aivan talon edessä, ja päätimme ottaa sisäkissan, jota ei ikimaailmassa päästettäisi ulos surman suuhun. Sisäkissa kaipaisi seuraa, ja niin uusiksi perheenjäseneniksi tulivat mustavalkoiset, keltaharmaasilmäiset pennut Mauno ja Lempi. Mauno oli tosi seurallinen, piti kaikista ihmisistä ja alkoi kehrätä heti  kun joku astui sisään. Se kaipasi seuraa, pysytteli ihmisten luona eikä välittänyt, vaikka tytär kanniskeli sitä ympäriinsä, mihin sitten menikin talossa. Lempi oli ujo ja viihtyi omissa oloissaan, mutta sekin saattoi tulla sängylle, kun Mauno oli siellä, ja jos istui sohvalla, molemmat hyppäsivät syliin. Ikävä kyllä Lempillä oli sydänvika, ja se kuoli vain 2-vuotiaana.
☆☆☆
Mauno tarvitsi uuden kaverin, ja niin meille tuli Liinu, sinisilmäinen neitokainen, jonka valkoisessa turkissa oli vain jokunen musta ja oranssi pilkku. Se ei pitänyt ihmisistä ja vältti kaikkia kontakteja, mutta onneksi se ja Mauno tulivat hyvin toimeen - Mauno oli kiltti herrasmies, antoi Liinun syödä ensin ja valita lelunsa, ja niistä tuli nopeasti ystävät. Mutta Maunolla oli huono tuuri naisystävien suhteen - vain vuoden päästä Liinu sairastui yhtäkkiä. Se kääntyili yhden yön sängyn alla, kuulostaen levottomalta, ja vaikka soitin eläinlääkärille heti aamusta, ressukka kuoli matkalla lääkäriin. Eläinlääkäri selvitti, että Liinulla oli tarttuva sairaus, jota ei olisi voinut mitenkään hoitaa. Joten Mauno oli nyt tartunnan kantaja, eikö saisi koskaan tavata muita kissoja. Mauno eli tyytyväisenä vielä kymmenisen vuotta, ainoa varhainen taudin oire oli, että siitä tuli vähitellen sokea, mutta sisäkissana se ei tuntunut haittaavan sitä yhtään. Se tykkäsi edelleen kaikista ja vastaanotti perheeseen vielä yhden ihmisvauvankin - mitä enemmän palvelusväkeä, sen parempi. Se oli lopulta jo 13-vuotias, kun huomattiin että se ei enää syönyt kunnolla ja alkoi vaikuttaa vanhalta, ja oli aika päästää se menemään. Tiedossa oli, että meidän täytyisi olla kissattomia viisi vuotta, jotta sairaus olisi varmasti kadonnut talosta, ja arvelin että en sitten enää edes haluaisi uutta lemmikkiä.
☆☆☆
Älä koskaan sano ei koskaan. Yhtenä keväänä tajusin, että viisi vuotta tulisi täyteen syksyllä, ja kun ajatus oli tullut mieleen, niin se ei lähtenyt pois. Miehen suostuttelemiseen meni muutama kuukausi, mutta muu perhe oli innoissaan ajatuksesta.
☆☆☆
Joten marssimme löytöeläintaloon, josta kaikki meidän kissat ovat tulleet. Toivoimme poikia, jotka olisivat jo kavereita, ja mieluiten jotain muuta väriä kuin mustavalkoista. Meille kerrottiin oransseista kaksospojista, joista emäntä oli allergian vuoksi suureksi surukseen joutunut luopumaan. Ja niin meistä tuli Taavin ja Kaapon ylpeät vanhemmat. Ne ottivat talon heti haltuun, niin kuin olisivat aina asuneet meillä. Ja jotta ympyrä sulkeutuisi, nämäkään mirrit eivät ole kovin perinteisiä kissoja - kun Kalle oli hullu seikkailija, Mauno ylivertaisen lempeä ja seurallinen, Lempi ujo, ja Liinu inhosi ihmisiä, Taavi ja Kaapo käyttäytyvät joskus kuin koirat - ne seuraavat ihmisen joka askelta, ottavat vastaan jokaisen tulijan ja jopa jahtaavat häntäänsä (en ole koskaan nähnyt kissojen tekevän sitä). Ne ovat meidän vauvoja ja jo pilalle hemmoteltuja, rakensimme niille jopa oman "kissanpöntön", koska vanhassa kodissa oli ollut iso verkotettu parveke.
☆☆☆
Mies, joka piti suostutella kissojen ottamiseen, ruokkii niitä, putsaa hiekkalaatikon, poimii poikia syliin ja toivoo, että ne nukkuisivat hänen jalkopäässään - kissat toki tekivät oman ratkaisun ja valitsivat tyttären huoneen omakseen. Vähän muuntaen vanhaa sananlaskua, parempi elää tassun alla kuin taivasalla - ja kissaihmisille juuri kissa tekee asunnosta kodikkaan.
How to (not) end a show
Middle-aged people know the infamous turn in the tv show Dallas, when Pamela woke up and her dead husband Bobby just came from shower, a whole season having been her dream. But many other shows have provided just as easy - or deep, however you see it - turnpoints and especially endings.
Did you watch Lost? I did, and together with half the world, had no idea how the end should have been understood. Most thought that characters had been dead all the time,  that the mysterious island was their purgatory, and the end in a church meant they got to go to heaven. Ten years after the end, the writers told that the group did survive the plane crash and lived on the island, but in the church they were dead, and helped each other to the other side. Sounds a bit odd, when even the makers couldn't really explain it understandably.
Then for something much more recent - Game of Thrones. The success was huge for seven years - then the production team decided to make the last season so bad that no-one would be sorry for the show being cancelled. Book readers like yours truly still wait for a couple of books to the series, and it remains to be seen how the original story will end. But the last season was lots of hype, scheming and preparing for the greatest battle ever, and then the last episode that just, well, died down. I have reread the books a couple of time after the show, actively trying to forget - actually, I do want to remember Peter Dinklage as Tyrion and Diana Rigg's Olenna Tyrell, but everything else can go. Show fans even collected names to demand a retake of the last season, and I get the pain.
True Blood was the thing before GoT - vampires, blood, violence, scheming and a bumpy love story. It, too, was based on a book series, but even more loosely than GoT. Here the problem is that the first 4 seasons very pretty good, just like the books. But then both run out of ideas - the books get worse and worse, and the show became more and more embarrassing, and the only thing to create interest was 'viking vampire sex god' Eric Northman, played by Alexander Skarsgård. In the end, the show had hardly anything to do with the books - in the last scene, the visibly pregnant heroine's husband is played by an extra who 'had strong arms' - Sookie had had several love interests, but they didn't want to choose any of them for the "happy ending". The books end in a completely different way, but even there the loose ends are tied up in way that most readers were furious about.
Vampires have been upfront in many ways - here one more story. The Vampire Diaries (left) is actually better than the books it is based on, and it even ended beautifully, if you don't mind the slight incredibility and from-top-of-the-hat solutions. But hey, it's about vampires! What bothers me is that it's spin-off The Originals (right) was better, but it was ended too soon, and too sadly. When you have followed 1000 years old, immortal and omnificent vampire siblings for a long time, it's not fair that the main character suddenly decides it's time to kill himself, leaving behind an orphan daughter and a love interest he'd promised to show the world, and be her 'not first, but last love'.
Next on my list is Revolution. It told about a world where electricity stops working, and described pretty well the consequences, when modern people must survive without everything that electricity enables in our daily life. Governments crash, the strongest take over, little people try to make it and new leaders emerge. The show was cancelled after two seasons, and pretty much everything was left open - the story could have continued for a long time, the mystery with the electricity was just opening up, and the fans yarned for answers, both for the scientific issues, and on personal level for the main characters. The producers provided yet a hyped "ending" - a comic strip in four parts - not even a bad joke, but a slap in the face of a devoted fan base.
Blacklist still goes on, but its former glory is long gone. The first two seasons about a FBI analyst working with a notorious criminal who helps finding the Most Wanted-listers was fascinating - the crime stories were the surface, but underneath was their personal history: who is she, and who is he really, is he her father or not, who (and why) hired the man to court and marry her, and so on. Many big questions are still open (in 8th season) and the relationship has been turned around multiple times - I find it hard to care anymore, and nowadays I just hop through the episodes, looking for some answers. James Spader as the Concierge of Crime helps, though 🤣.
Last but not least I pick up Los Serrano, a family-friendly Spanish show about a newlywed couple with his and her children living under the same roof, with a bunch of relatives, friends and colleagues who constantly get involved with everything. I really liked the show and cared about the characters (there are 8 seasons and 147 long episodes😳), and eagerly waited what would happen to them, especially the children when they grow up. The last season first seemed to tie up the loose ends and give happily-ever-after for most people, but then things started going wild. In the end, Diego the father was about to take his life - and then he woke up, his wife Lucia (dead a year ago) in bed next to him, smiling, and it was the morning after their wedding - the Dallas trick! They got up, went to kitchen and found the children - the whole show had been Diego's dream. It was kind of funny how the child actors tried to look much younger (and smaller 🤣), but otherwise the ending solution felt really stupid - did they just run out of ideas?
Luckily, there's always fan fiction to turn to. You may find very interesting alternative stories and endgames, by people who are not happy with the original story, or want to add something that's still canon, keeping the official facts. Some stories which pick up from where the writers left the story, or create a complete underworld besides the show script. The best ficcers may have seen a left-out scene or a what if-idea, and create a plot with new characters, dealings and consequences, filling out some time periods or giving more flesh to the bones of an episode - many of them are so convincing, that you start wondering whether some event happened in the official narrative or if it was a fanfic. Revolution was cancelled 2014, and I still read newly-written stories about the characters.
~~~~~~~~
☆☆☆
Sitten tuoreempi sarja, Game of Thrones.
☆☆☆
Seuraava listalla on Revolution.
☆☆☆

Winter is not for the weak

As Game of Thrones kept on warning, the winter finally came. Many of us had already grown accustomed to cold season with almost no snow, only a few days with really cold temperatures and no need for winter overalls and boots.
As I told earlier, I have practised on my snow-ploughing skills lately. The last snowy winters we still had five people in the house, but now the staff has been reduced and the adults have reached the stage where you realise that you actually grow older year by year.
There's been some very cold days on every winter, but now we've had serious minus grades for weeks. The snowy trees look magnificent when the low winter sun shines through the tops. It brings back memories of childhood winters, skiing in the forest with a cousin, shaking the snow off the branches  - a "snowshower" was really fun 😳❄🤣.
The two oldest of our kids had "real" winters with snow - they built snowmen and forts, and once discovered "a dinosaur skeleton" when wet snow got packed into big blocks. But the youngest one's childhood provided much less wintry entertainment - no matter how hard we tried to collect all the snow from the yard to a little sled hill, it melted in a few days. Her age group didn't even learn to ski and skate properly, because they had so little chance to practise in the early years.
When I was a child, my father built an impressive toboggan ride in front of the house. It kept intact for weeks, and so did the ski slopes on the fields. I built snowmen and lanterns, jumped into the heaps and went skating when it wasn't terribly cold. It's been a long time since our yard has looked like a winter wonderland, but this year it finally happened. Too bad there's no longer anyone who would enjoy this kind of weather ❄🙂.
Actually, there are two members of the family who are very disappointed with us humans - why don't we do something about that coldness? Especially Taavi the cat has taken up sitting on our bedroom's windowsill, judging the weather and my janitory skills in fighting the snow. Certainly he would do it better.
His brother Kaapo is more adventurous when it comes to visiting their cat balcony on a cold day - Taavi usually puts his nose out and turns back, but Kaapo can actually spend a few minutes outside. I only let them sniff the weather for a little while, and close the window when they come back inside. But there's a problem: in the summer Kaapo stayed on the balcony floor, and Taavi was the one to sleep on the upper levels. Now Kaapo realised there's no snow up there, closer to the ceiling, and I once closed the window though he was sitting on the highest shelf. I did notice soon that he was missing, but it could have ended badly 😳😾. So counting the cats is my new daily hobby.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Kuten Game of Thrones jaksoi muistuttaa, talvi tuli viimein. Moni oli jo tottunut siihen, että kylmänä vuodenaikana oli vain vähän lunta, muutama kunnon pakkaspäivä eikä toppahaalareita ja talvisaappaita tarvittu.
☆☆☆
Kerroin jo aiemmin, että olen viime aikoina hionut lumenluontitaitojani. Aiempina lumitalvina talossa oli vielä viisi asukasta, mutta nyt henkilökunta on vähentynyt ja aikuiset ovat tulleet vaiheeseen, jossa huomaa että tosiaan vanhenee vuosi vuodelta.
☆☆☆
Talvisin on aina ollut jokunen todella kylmä päivä, mutta nyt oikeat pakkaset jatkuivat viikkoja. Lumiset puut ovat upeita, kun talviaurinko paistaa matalalta latvojen läpi. Se tuo mieleen lapsuuden talvet, kun hiihdettiin serkun kanssa metsässä, pudotellen lunta puiden oksilta - "lumisuihku" oli jännä 😳❄🤣.
☆☆☆
Kaksi vanhinta lasta saivat kokea lumisia talvia - he rakensivat lumiukkoja ja -linnoja, ja kerran löysivät "dinosauruksen luurangon" kun märkä lumi oli pakkautunut suuriksi lohkareiksi. Mutta nuorimmaisen lapsuudessa oli paljon vähemmän talvista viihdettä  - vaikka kuinka kolasimme lumet tontilta yhteen kasaan, liukumäki suli muutamassa päivässä. Hänen ikäluokkansa ei saanut oppia edes kunnolla hiihtämään ja luistelemaan, kun oli niin vähän tilaisuuksia harjoitella pienenä.
☆☆☆
Kun minä olin lapsi, isä rakensi vaikuttavan pulkkamäen talon eteen. Se pysyi ehjänä viikkokausia, samoin pelloille tehdyt ladut. Rakensin lumiukkoja ja lyhtyjä, hypin kinoksiin ja kävin luistelemassa, kun ei ollut hirveän kylmä. Siitä on kauan kun meidän piha on näyttänyt talven ihmemaalta, mutta nyt se viimein tapahtui. Vahinko, ettei kotona ole enää ketään joka nauttisi kinoksista ❄🙂.
☆☆☆
 Itse asiassa kaksi perheenjäsentä ovat erittäin pettyneitä ihmisiin - miksei tuolle kylmyydelle tehdä mitään? Varsinkin Taavi-kissa on ottanut tavaksi istua makuuhuoneen ikkunalaudalla, ja arvostella säätä sekä minun talonmiestaitojani lumenhallinnassa. Toki se tekisi kaiken paremmin.
☆☆☆
Velipoika Kaapo on rohkeampi, kun kysytään onko kissaparvekkeelle menijöitä kylmänä päivänä. Taavi yleensä pistää nenänsä ulos ja kääntyy takaisin, mutta Kaapo voi viihtyä montakin minuuttia. Annan niiden nuuskutella säätä vain hetken, ja suljen ikkunan kun ne tulevat sisään. Mutta tähän liittyy ongelma: kesällä Kaapo oleili parvekkeen lattialla, ja Taavi tapasi nukkua ylätasoilla. Nyt Kaapo hoksasi että ylhäällä katonrajassa ei ole lunta, ja kerran suljin ikkunan, vaikka se istui ylimmällä hyllyllä. Huomasin kyllä pian että se puuttui, mutta siinä olisi voinut käydä huonosti 😳😾. Tämän takia kissojen laskeminen on uusi päivittäinen harrastukseni.
Comfort food for winter
And now something comforting and absolutely non-political. In midwinter, you kind of feel hungry all the time and long for some filling food.
Pretty much the perfect choice for a Saturday evening at home, is this pizza. You can prepare it earlier, since the dough doesn't need to rise, and put it in the oven for example when the guests arrive (arrived, before Mrs.'Rona took over). On the top I have lots of tuna, sliced ham, minced meat and grated cheese. In addition to that, tomatoes either sliced or mashed (ketchup is fine, too), oregano and perhaps pineapple chunks, peach slices and/or blue cheese - the last three usually on one half only, because one family member won't touch them, whereas for me, there's no such thing as too much pineapple or blue cheese.
We bought an Airfryer for a year ago, but have mostly used it as grill-inside-the-house - sometimes, when I have too much time, I'll step into the world of airfried cupcakes, bread and seafood. But for now, it's the perfect way to prepare french fries, meatballs and sausage, they taste better than with any other method. There is also some green salad and cherry tomatoes in the picture, not just sausage and meat! This is a nice tv dinner, made in about 20 minutes.
Now we turn to a more healthy aspect of comforting winter food. This is my own composure as well, bearing in mind certain dear ones who love chicken and cucumber. A thick layer of shredded lettuce or other kind of greens, on the top of that sliced chicken, roasted in a pan (the more chicken, the more filling the meal). The rest is up to what I find in the fridge, but in the picture I have cut a box of cherry tomatoes in half and spread them as the third layer, artistically together with cucumber slices. Looks nice, is very tasty and disappears in minutes when you bring the food to the table 🙂. Serve with some sweet salad dressing.
This winter, our youngest one has found the world of cooking. She's always been capable of making her own breakfasts and snacks, but now we may get for supper fried eggs with some greens, fruit salads, porridge and what not - the picture shows waffles she made on an ordinary Thursday evening. I am a lazy cook and always go the easy way, but my daughters must have inherited different genes from their both Grandma's, who could start a catering service at any old time.
Last but not least, come the pulla. Shrove Tuesday is celebrated in February, and everyone has an opinion about Shrove buns, filled with almond paste and whipped cream, or nowadays more and more often with raspberry jam and cream. I like both, but the best bun is homemade, filled with cream and my mil's strawberry jam - which is so good that you run out of adjectives. Believe me, it's yummy 😋. We made the first batch in the beginning of February, and there will be more, probably all the way to the schools' winter vacation week.
I'm old enough to remember the world of homecooking without ready-made food, all kinds of frozen meals and vegetables, and above all, internet recipes. I still want to have my favourites on paper, write them down and add my own tips and notifications. I search for ideas here and there, but only the best (= easy-to-make-but-still-good) recipes get the honour to be written in The Official Recipe Book. As I only buy books that I'm going to read again and again, the rest I get from the library, and in the same way I only save the recipes I'm going to use ten years from now, others I can find online when needed. Happiness is home made, but you're not obliged to make it every single day.
~~~~~~~
Ja nyt jotain lohdullista ja täysin epäpoliittista. Keskitalvella on koko ajan nälkäinen olo ja tekee mieli täyttävää ruokaa.
☆☆☆
☆☆☆
Tänä talvena kuopus on löytänyt kokkaamisen maailman.
☆☆☆

Moomin philosophy for beginners

Most people know Tove Jansson's beloved Moomin characters, have seen some of the animation series or even have read the comics or books. The Moomin are not only entertainment for kids, but their whole lifestyle is based on a very philosophic view on life, one might say laissez-faire in French or "let it be".
Here we have Snorkmaiden, taking a nap in a gracious pose amongst flowers. She doesn't have a care in the world, as she knows that she is beautiful, talented and beloved, supported by friends and a smart brother. Whereas Snorkmaiden is feminine and cautious, Little My is sassy, loud and self-secure, back in the day she had been called a tomboy. Fillyjonk personifies the irritating auntie, neighbour or other patronizing person with high-handed moral sensibilities, but Mymble represents another, bohemian kind of mothering, not really sure where her children live and how many there are.
My all time favourite is Moominmamma, who always remains calm, knows what to do and never gets angry when the kids (and her spouse) cause trouble. She is a wonderful person, a caregiver and the backbone that keeps the whole extended family on track, but yet is always ready for new adventures and days by the sea. She knows her value and never doubts her place in the universe, though one might mistake the character for a traditional homemaker, tied to the stove by her apron strings. Moominmamma is strong and confident, she chooses to take care of her family, because she loves them.
Do you remember the story where a prophet arrived in the Valley and preached living "free life"? Pretty much everyone was enthusiastic about this idea, the children started doing whatever they wanted and Moominpappa decided to live in a tree, free from familial responsibilities and societal pressure. The downside was that they all still needed food, and expected Moominmamma to provide. She gave some thought for the situation, and wrote a letter where she told she'd be in the woods, looking for freedom. Moominpappa came back to the house, tried to cook something with less stellar results, and his reaction was "But the Mamma can't live free life!" She could, for a while, until she came back and told that she missed the family more than freedom. After that, life returned quietly to what is normal in the Moomin way.
Here we get to the males of the species. From the main characters, Moomintroll is a mama's boy, who still sees himself as a hero, protecting Snorkmaiden, fighting Stinky and looking for adventures. Sniff is childish, with big words but scared inside, impulsive but a supportive friend. Snufkin represents the bachelor uncle, who has his own ways, gets around a lot and returns occasionally, for food, company and the admiration of the "nephew", Moomintroll. If Moominmamma is at least partially based on the writer's mother, Moominpappa probably resembles her father to some point. Both parents were artists, she an illustrator and he a sculptor. One can easily believe that living in an artistic household was interesting - perhaps the free life was just around the corner, but the children still needed food, shelter and love.
This quote is from Moomintroll, but it describes well the Moomin view of life. They see new acquaintances as new friends, expect the life to treat them well, appreciate culinary competence, and bump into new adventures on a regular basis. They have parties, like music, go fishing and meet friends, drink wine when the spirit moves th - they have it all, and never need to worry about taxes, pandemic, renovating the house or being laid off from work. Every day is a new gift, if you live like Moomin - they were the original hyggers before it was invented. Happy Valentine's day!
~~~~~~~~~~
Useimmat tietävät Tove Janssonin rakastetut muumihahmot, ovat ehkä nähneet animaatioita tai jopa lukeneet kirjoja tai sarjakuvia. Muumit eivät ole pelkästään lasten viihdettä, vaan heillä on varsin filosofinen elämäntapa, ranskaksi "laissez-faire" tai antaa mennä.
☆☆☆
Ensimmäisessä kuvassa Niiskuneiti on torkuilla, sulokkaasti kukkien keskellä. Hänen maailmassaan ei ole huolen häivää, koska hän tietää olevansa kaunis, taitava ja rakastettu, ystävien ja fiksun veljen tukema. Niiskuneiti on naisellinen ja varovainen, kun Pikku Myy on ärhäkkä, äänekäs ja itsevarma, sellainen jota ennen vanhaan olisi sanottu poikatytöksi. Vilijonkassa henkilöityy ärsyttävä täti, naapuri tai muu kukkahattutyyppi, jolla on aivan liian suuret moraaliset odotukset, kun taas Mymmeli edustaa toisenlaista, boheemia äitiyttä, jossa ei ole niin nuukaa missä lapset asuvat tai montako heitä edes on.
☆☆☆
Minun ehdoton suosikkini on Muumimamma, joka on aina rauhallinen, tietää mitä tehdä, eikä hermostu kun lapset (ja puoliso) aiheuttavat harmeja. Hän on ihana hahmo, huolehtija ja tukipylväs, joka pitää koko suurperheen raiteilla, mutta on silti aina valmis seikkailuun tai rantapäivään. Hän tuntee arvonsa eikä epäile paikkaansa maailmankaikkeudessa, vaikka hahmoa voisi erehtyä luulemaan perinteiseksi kotirouvaksi, joka on essun nauhoista kiinni hellassa. Muumimamma on voimakas ja itsevarma persoona, joka on valinnut että huolehtii perheestään, koska rakastaa heitä.
☆☆☆
Muistatteko tarinan, jossa Muumilaaksoon saapui profeetta, joka julisti vapaata elämää? Jokseenkin kaikki innostuivat siitä, lapset alkoivat tehdä mitä huvitti ja Pappa päätti muuttaa asumaan puuhun, vapautuakseen perhe-elämän kahleista ja yhteiskunnan odotuksista. Heikko kohta tässä oli, että kaikki tarvitsivat silti ruokaa, ja odottivat että Mamma jatkaa kokkaamista. Hän mietti tilannetta jonkin aikaa ja jätti sitten kirjeen, jossa kertoi etsivänsä vapautta metsässä.  Muumipappa muutti takaisin taloon ja yritti tehdä ruokaa vähemmän hyvin tuloksin, ja hänen reaktionsa oli "Mutta eihän Mamma voi viettää vapaata elämää!" Kyllä muuten voi, jonkin aikaa, kunnes tuli takaisin ja kertoi kaipaavansa perhettä enemmän kuin vapautta. Tämän jälkeen palattiin vähin äänin normaaliin päiväjärjestykseen.
☆☆☆
Nyt päästään lajin mieshahmoihin. Päähenkilöistä Muumipeikko on äidin poika, joka kuitenkin näkee itsensä sankarina, suojellen Niiskuneitiä ja tapellen Haisulin kanssa, aina etsien seikkailuja. Nipsu on lapsekas, suuret puheet mutta sisältä pelokas, impulsiivinen mutta kannustava ystävä. Nuuskamuikkunen edustaa poikamiesenoa, jolla on omat tapansa, hän reissaa ja näkee maailmaa, mutta palaa aina sopivasti saadakseen ruokaa, seuraa ja "siskonpojan" eli Muumipeikon ihailua. Jos Muumimamma perustuu ainakin jossain määrin kirjailijan äitiin, Muumipappa luultavasti muistuttaa joltain osin tämän isää. Molemmat vanhemmat olivat taiteilijoita, äiti kuvittaja ja isä kuvanveistäjä. On helppo uskoa, että elämä taiteellisessa taloudessa oli mielenkiintoista, kenties vapaa elämä oli aivan nurkan takana, mutta lapset tarvitsivat ruokaa, suojaa ja rakkautta.
☆☆☆
Muumipeikon toteamus, että henkilö ei voi olla kovin vaarallinen, jos syö pannukakkuja hillon kanssa, kuvaa hyvin muumien filosofiaa. He pitävät uusia tuttavia uusina ystävinä, odottavat elämältä hyvää, arvostavat kulinaarisia taitoja ja törmäävät säännöllisesti uusiin seikkailuihin. He pitävät juhlia, nauttivat musiikista, käyvät kalassa ja tapaavat ystäviä, juovat viiniä kun siltä tuntuu - heillä on kaikkea, eikä ikinä tarvitse huolehtia veroista, pandemiasta, taloremontista tai työttömyydestä. Jokainen päivä on lahja, jos elää kuin muumit - he olivat alkuperäisiä kotoilijoita ennen kuin koko käsite keksittiin. Hyvää ystävänpäivää!
Bullies will bully
Finnish Ministry of Education announced a new programme for preventing bullying at school. This is an excellent goal, but sadly I'm afraid it will, once again, be much talk but not so much effect.
(In the following, I'm going use words boys and girls, though I know it's a simplified picture of the world. Anyone can be a bully, no matter of sex or gender. Some parts are unpleasant but the end is ok, I promise 🙂.) When we talk about school bullies we often think of a big boy pushing and hitting smaller ones, or girls leaving one out of their group. But in real life, the ways of abusing your fellow school children are endless.
All in all, boys tend to be more physical about this. Back in the day, grown-ups talked about "fair fight", which meant that the parts fought 1-on-1, and were about the same age or size. Even today, some parents tell their kids to hit back, which is totally wrong - an adult's job is to notify and stop violence amongst kids! I was 7 years old, waiting for the teacher to come to class, when the boys thought it would be fun to kick my ankles and legs. They did this for weeks, always warning that I couldn't tell anyone, as they would do something worse. Later on came the unavoidable pushing, hair-pulling, snowballs, tripping, hiding my things and so, on and on.
Girls didn't participate in physical abuse, but I had been market as the victim, so everyone thought it was better to take some distance. I was the last to be picked in sports teams and the last choice in group tasks. If I was invited to a birthday party, it was because the parents had said all girls, and I just waited when I'd be left out or called names, wanting to go home. My parents realised something was wrong, but I was too afraid to admit that I was being bullied on a daily basis, and they thought it was just about adapting to a group, because I was then an only child and very shy.
Now that we've had a classic example of a bully as the "leader of the free world", nothing seems to be off limits. My physical and verbal abuse went on for six years, sometimes there were better times, but I don't think I ever had a school day when I wasn't anxious and at least prepared. I was a good student so my help was appreciated, but then it was ok to call me swot or nerd. I was a big girl and definitely not into sports, so even the teachers sighed watching me trying to run. My parents were religious and we didn't have a tv, so it was really fun to ask my opinion about a film and make me say I couldn't have seen it. On the top of these attributes, I was shy and reserved, far too scared to defend myself verbally or physically.
All the time I knew that most of the bullies just went along with some strong personalities, many even felt bad for what happened, but were afraid to say something. Very few people those days got through school without any abusive experience, so it was wise to lie low. Some of the worst bullies had very strict parents and got beaten home, and my 10-old-self was even sorry for them, knowing that they let out the steam, taking it on me. The teachers must have known something wasn't right, but because there was neither blood nor broken legs, they let it go. In the 70's, it was still common to tell the girls that boys showed interest by teasing, so a girl was supposed to be glad about snowballs and hairpulling 😳. Most people thought that bullying was inavoidable, it had always been there and everyone had been  the target at some point.
When I moved on to a bigger school, I just decided not to take it anymore. I found new friends right away and remade myself to a pretty self-secure, quick-witted person. If someone was mean to me, I defended myself, and once even told my father about some boys calling me names - Dad called one of their fathers who was his old buddy, and that was it. How I wish that someone would have told me earlier that it's ok to ask the adults for help! I have forgiven everyone - they were kids, too - but I'll never forget. My little sister once said that my self-esteem is big as a mountain, but she didn't know it's been dearly paid for - they do say what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.
I have three children, and when I even think about someone bullying them, a tiger awakens inside me. Their school years were not perfect, no-one's are, but luckily they had friends and the problems were mostly solvable. Today's teachers are much better aware of what happens in the corners, but kids can be sneaky and mean, if they think they won't be caught. I wish the ministry good luck in preventing abusive school environment, but remember: it's not only the school's and the teacher's job - every adult should make it clear that we won't accept a bully, neither at school nor anywhere else. Tell it to your kids, siblings, grandkids, floorball team, choir boys and girls, colleagues, neighbours, everyone where you are. Personal safety is a human right.
Opetusministeriö julkisti hiljattain ohjelman koulukiusaamisen vähentämiseksi. Tavoite on erinomainen, mutta pahoin pelkään, että tälläkin kertaa muutos jää puheen tasolle.
☆☆☆
(Seuraavassa puhun pojista ja tytöistä, vaikka maailma ei ole niin yksiselitteinen. Mutta kuka vain voi olla kiusaaja. Jotkin kohdat ovat epämukavia, mutta loppu on ihan hyvä 🙂.) Koulukiusaajista puhuttaessa ajatellaan usein isoa poikaa, joka tönii ja lyö pienempiä, tai tyttöjä, jotka sulkevat yhden ulkopuolelle.  Mutta oikeassa elämässä kiusaamisen tapoja on loputtomasti.
☆☆☆
Yleensä pojat ovat fyysisempiä. Aikoinaan oli käsite "reilu tappelu", joka tarkoitti, että tapeltiin yksi yhtä vastaan, ja osapuolet olivat aika lailla samanikäisiä tai -kokoisia. Nykyäänkin jotkut vanhemmat käskevät lyödä takaisin, mikä on selvästi väärin - aikuisen tehtävä on huomata ja lopettaa väkivalta lasten välillä! Olin 7-vuotias odottelemassa opettajaa luokkaan, kun pojat keksivät, että olisi hauskaa potkia minua sääriin ja nilkkoihin. Sitä jatkui viikkokausia, aina varoittaen kertomasta kellekään, koska sitten he tekisivät pahempaa. Myöhemmin tuli kuvaan töniminen, tukasta vetäminen, lumipallot, kamppaaminen, tavaroiden piilotus ja niin edelleen.
Tytöt eivät osallistuneet fyysisesti, mutta kun uhri oli merkattu, kaikki ottivat etäisyyttä. Olin aina viimeinen valinta joukkueeseen tai ryhmätyöhön. Jos minut kutsuttiin syntymäpäiville, vanhemmat olivat halunneet kutsua kaikki tytöt, ja odotin vain koska minut suljetaan porukasta tai aletaan nimitellä, ja olisin mieluummin ollut kotona. Vanhemmat tiesivät, että jokin oli vialla, mutta en uskaltanut myöntää jokapäiväistä kiusaamista, ja he luulivat että koska olin ujo ja siihen aikaan ainoa lapsi, en vain sopeutunut isoon ryhmään.
☆☆☆
Nyt kun "vapaan maailman johtajana" on ollut klassinen esimerkki kiusaajasta, kaikki on sallittua. Minua pahoinpideltiin kuusi vuotta fyysisesti ja sanallisesti, välillä oli parempia kausia, mutta en usko että oli yhtäkään koulupäivää, jolloin en olisi ollut hermostunut ja ainakin varuillani. Olin hyvä koulussa ja apuni kelpasi, mutta sitten sanottiin pingoksi ja hikariksi. Olin isokokoinen enkä todellakaan sporttinen, ja opettajatkin huokailivat katsoessaan juoksuyrityksiäni. Vanhemmat olivat uskonnollisia eikä meillä ollut televisiota, ja oli hirveän hauskaa kysyä mielipidettäni elokuvasta ja pakottaa minut sanomaan, etten ollut voinut katsoa sitä. Näiden lisäksi olin ujo ja varautunut, ja aivan liian peloissani puolustautumaan sanoilla tai  teoilla.
☆☆☆
Tajusin koko ajan, että useimmat kiusaajat vain myötäilivät vahvoja persoonallisuuksia, monista jopa tuntui pahalta, mutta he eivät uskaltaneet sanoa mitään. Tuohon aikaan harva selvisi koulun läpi joutumatta kiusatuksi, joten kannatti pitää matalaa profiilia. Jonkun pahimman kiusanhengen kotona oli kova kuri ja annettiin selkäsaunoja, ja 10-vuotias minä tunsi jopa sääliä, tietäen että olin vain sopiva keino päästellä höyryjä. Opettajien täytyi tietää että kaikki ei ollut hyvin, mutta kun ei näkynyt verta eikä katkenneita luita, ei välitetty. 70-luvulla tytöille sanottiin, että pojat vain osoittivat kiinnostusta kiusaamalla, joten tytön piti olla iloinen lumipesuista ja tukasta vetämisestä. Useimmat uskoivat, että kiusaamista ei voi lopettaa, sitä on aina ollut, ja jokainen on joskus joutunut kohteeksi.
☆☆☆
Kun vaihdoin isompaan kouluun, päätin vain että nyt riitti. Löysin ystäviä ja loin itselleni uuden, itsevarman ja sanavalmiin minän. Jos joku oli ilkeä puolustauduin, kerran jopa sanoin isälle, kun pari poikaa nimitteli minua - isä soitti yhden isälle, vanhalle kaverilleen, ja kiusa loppui siihen. Kunpa joku olisi kertonut minulle ekaluokalla, että voi pyytää apua aikuisilta! Olen antanut kaikille anteeksi - hekin olivat vain lapsia - mutta unohda en koskaan. Pikkusisko luonnehti kerran, että minulla on vuoren kokoinen itsetunto, mutta hän ei tiennyt, että siitä on maksettu kalliisti - sanotaan, että mikä ei tapa, se vahvistaa.
☆☆☆
Minulla on kolme omaa lasta, ja kun ajattelenkin, että joku kiusaisi heitä, sisälläni herää tiikeriemo. Heidän kouluaikansa ei ollut täydellistä - kenenpä olisi - mutta heillä oli onneksi kavereita ja ongelmat olivat pääosin ratkaistavissa. Nykypäivän opettajat tietävät paremmin mitä nurkissa on meneillään, mutta lapset osaavat olla ovelia ja ilkeitä, kun eivät usko jäävänsä kiinni. Toivon ministeriölle onnea kiusaamisen kitkemisessä, mutta muistakaa: se ei ole vain koulun ja opettajien tehtävä - aikuisten pitää tehdä selväksi, että emme hyväksy kiusaajia, ei koulussa eikä muualla. Kerro se lapsille, sisaruksille, lapsenlapsille, sählyjoukkueelle, lapsikuorolle, naapurille, työkaverille, kaikille siellä missä liikut. Turvallisuus on ihmisoikeus.
