Mother's Day is every day

Happy Mother's Day to each and everyone out there! It is a beautiful tradition and a good reminder of that the mankind couldn't make it if there weren't mothers. Although the daily life is, in most countries, not quite as tough as is used to be, and it is easier to keep a baby alive, it is still a big task to take responsibility for a whole new human being and raise that child to become a decent adult. Not saying that the fathers wouldn't have their share to do with it, but I do claim that in many families, it is the mother who takes care of the little daily things in the children's lives, remembers the dentist's appointments, plans the birthday parties, attends the parental meetings and so on.
In our minds, we have a picture of how the Mother's Day should be celebrated: the family making breakfast in the kitchen while mom pretends to be sleeping, coffee in bed and perhaps singing a song, cards, presents and roses. And of course, lunch or dinner in a restaurant, the whole family, grandparents and friends present. This is what we have learned from movies and tv shows, where the sun is always shining in the spotless kitchen.
In real life, that's not how it goes. I don't know about you others, but I won't wait for my breakfast, because I need my coffee, and my back starts to hurt if I sleep too long. And I do not want to eat in bed, it would simply feel stupid and awkward. However, I do get a lot of self-made cards and little presents, and that's just lovely. This year I got five cards - I only have three children, but the youngest one spends several days drawing and planning and anxiously waiting for the big day to come.  (I have told my husband about twenty years ago that I'm not his mom and therefore expect nothing from him on the Mother's Day.)
Personally I have always felt that the Mother's Day is more about the grandmothers. When I was a child we would always visit my grannies and meet my parents' siblings and my cousins, the whole extended family. Now that the grannies are no longer with us, the focus has moved to the next generation, and we are celebrating my children's grandmothers. We visited my mother-in-law yesterday and will be seeing my own mother the next Saturday, she had other plans for this weekend. I discussed this the other day with a couple of colleagues, and we came to the conclusion that it has always been the grandmothers - it is the oldest generation that gets the attention, and perhaps it is exactly as it should be. They have taken care of us all and still keep worrying about us, hoping for the best but preparing for the worst, always ready to help if and when we need them.
Do you remember the "friendship books" that little school girls use to have? The ones where you tell your favourite colour, subjects at school and which boy band you like? There's always also the inavoidable question of what you'll be when you grow up. My husband once answered this "a grandfather", and that's a great career goal for anybody! So I'll set my mind on becoming a grandmother - wise, respectable, dignified and well-mannered, a great listener and even better in giving hugs and advice. It must be pointed out that this doesn't automatically include having grandchildren of my own, because you can very well be an honorary grandma to all children in the world. However, I do have three children and hope to hear little feet tapping in this house, again - maybe not in the immediate future but some day. If I can't make all those things I used to describe a grandmother, I'll focus on the hugs and listening, and probably try to slip in some advice as well, hoping that my offspring pays a little more attention than Arthur Dent.
Muistatteko ystäväkirjat, joita tytöillä on koulun alaluokilla?

The Labour Day is not about the spring cleaning

Have you already washed your windows, cleaned the closets and changed the curtains for the summer? How about raking the lawn and buying new plants if you have a garden? Guess what -
I have done none of those things, and I very much doubt that I will, either. Do you remember that Moomin story in which the forest animals believed that Christmas was some scary and dangerous monster? Everyone kept cleaning, cooking and buying presents for Christmas, and they thought it was because you'd have to give the beast all kinds of things so it would leave the village alone.
I do believe that the spring is not afraid of my dirty windows, and the summer will be here eventually, even if I don't kill myself with gardening. We will probably do as much as pick the dead leaves and comb the lawn a little here and there, and buy a couple of summer flowers in hanging baskets. As for the indoor cleaning, I'll wait and see whether the inspiration will strike me or not - but I'm not holding my breath.
In Finland we celebrate the Labour Day on May the 1st. It is considered a joint carnival for workers,
students and spring in general, and on Labour Day, every Finn belongs to working class. It is perhaps the only day of the year when the calm and introverted Finns may be able to let it go and have party in the streets, talking to strangers and swimming in fountains... Many of us change into summer clothing, no matter what the weather, and go picknicking in the nearest park. If our ancestors started going barefoot from May the 1st, we can't be any weaker than that! My husband and I have often barbecued though it's been snowing, but hey, we have also had grilled sausages with our guests on many a New Year's Eve. This year, we are staying home the whole weekend and don't have any extra activities - not even a trip to the marketplace to buy the traditional Vappu-balloon.
But back to the ongoing spring buzz - my mother-in-law does the windows about every month, my
mother wouldn't dream of not planting something new every year, and I know many people in my own generation who really look forward to the summer time and all outside activities that go with it. I kind of envy those who have the energy, but for me, summer means the opportunity to drink my morning coffee on the deck and that I only need to get myself to the work, don't need to worry about the daughters' school work. Dalai Lama's advice can be applied to all kinds of situations, especially things that you "must do" because your mother and grandmother always did: “If there is no solution to the problem then don't waste time worrying about it. If there is a solution to the problem then don't waste time worrying about it." In other words, don't worry - do what you can and focus on being happy.

Feeding the troops and other daily nuisances

When you have children, you are supposed to
feed them regularly. This is mostly a boring business, unless you can afford a household staff that sees to their needs, or if you happen to run a restaurant. Otherwise this daily demand takes a lot of planning and work, and no matter what you do, it could always be done better. Thank heavens, nowadays we have many ways to make it easier. But no matter what you do, somebody thinks you're not good enough.
If you make pancakes and bake, you're spoiling you offspring rotten and ruining their health. If you serve potatoes and vegetables, you are boring and old-fashioned. If you're into testing new things
and tastings from other cultures, you can be sure that's not good either, because children must learn to value familiar things and cultural traditions. And I won't even start about microwave meals, fast food or canned soups, or the fact that these days everything is somehow dangerous to your health - eat fish, but not this or that sort and make sure where it is from, eat vegetables but they must be organic, dairy products make your bones strong but choose only natural yoghurt and non-greasy milk, bread is good for you but there's too much carbs in it, drink enough but not juice, milk, lemonade, tea or coffee - I suppose the only safe alternative is water and organic carrots.
This is why I have decided not to worry about the artistic points when it comes to family cooking. We have regular meals together but the preparing stage is as relaxed as possible - sometimes we use
precooked ingredients, canned food and even serve readymade meals from microwave, but we also peal potatoes, make sauces, fry fish, chicken and meat, and always have some kind of salad. In other words, the end justifies the means.
It is practical to cook some extra when you're at it, either you eat the same dinner for two days, the extra portion goes to the freezer, or you remake yesterday's food into something else the next day. For example, a rice and chicken pot today, a tuna risotto tomorrow - you get the point. Every time I buy minced meat, I take several kilos, fry it all and put it in the freezer in suitable portions, to have easy options when we need to prepare fast something edible.
Don't get me wrong - I do appreciate people who make their own salad dressings, bake bread and never buy ready-to-serve. But I don't see why I should be one of them, since it obviously isn't my thing. I doubt that my children would be more happy if their smashed potatoes were always made from the start, and I hate to break it to you, but none of us is going to live forever no matter how healthy our diet. If I stayed home I would probably enjoy taking care of the family and surprising them with great meals, but as long as I work full time, I won't spend more time in the kitchen than necessary. If you have read my other blogs you know that my husband does a lot of our daily cooking and other chores, but he works full time, too, and he doesn't especially love standing in the kitchen, either. Live, laugh and love - feed the troops but don't let that raise your blood pressure, it's not good for you.
On kätevää laittaa enemmän kerralla - joko syödään samaa kaksi kertaa, ylimääräinen menee pakastimeen tai sitten osa ruoasta tuunataan joksikin muuksi seuraavana päivänä, tyyliin riisi-kanapata tänään, tonnikalarisotto huomenna.

No rest for the wicked

The last ten days have been like a rollercoaster. First I was on a business trip, spent a couple of days
in Helsinki attending a workshop. Here you see me as the competent businesswoman I am, travelling with my stylish bags and listening to music on the train... Sometimes I've been travelling quite a lot in my work, but nowadays overnight trips are rare and I certainly like it that way. When your fortysomething, it can be fun to go some places, but all in all, there's no place like home. You can spend one evening shopping but nights at a hotel become very boring after a while, not to mention missing your family and especially your own bed.
The next day was Saturday with something totally different: the great firewood project at my Mum's house. My brother was the chainsaw operator, my husband arranged the logs for sawing and threw the readymade pieces away from the saw. And then the fun part: picking up the pieces, carrying them to the shed and arranging them into neat stacks. For this job we had a truly competent crew, my sister-in-law, my 17-year-old daughter and myself. My work is mostly tapping on a keyboard and the others do about the same, the daughter sometimes uses a pen or read a book if she's not on her phone. But we did it! When there's twenty cubic meters of dry birchwood in Mum's shed, it doesn't matter though holding a cup of coffee is virtually impossible and putting on a sock feels like running a marathon. She's a lumberjack and she's ok, sleeps all night and works all day!
After the relaxing woodwork weekend it was time to go back to business as usual. This means mostly working (tapping) as fast as you can, correcting other people's mistakes and remembering about thousand details at the same time. My unit produces documents for other departments, and thus our job is to be efficient and pedantic, know everything about our business, find problems that the salespersons haven't seen and generally be the caretakers/genitors who only get noticed if we fail. This week I got also to be a teacher for a few hours - this is something that haunts me from my previous profession, as the company sometimes wants to benefit from my alleged lecturing skills.
This morning my body finally decided to give up, and I woke up with a phenomenal flu. A working day just never ends when you keep sneezing, coughing, drinking coffee/water/vitamin drinks and eating pills and fresh mints. The worst part is to keep saying people you're not angry, it's just difficult to speak, and you're not crying even if your eyes are filled with water. Therefore I declare this weekend an official resting time, to be spent on a couch with a remote, a package of tissues, and a comfy blanket. It gets even better if you are provided with a helpful family, ready to fulfill your needs, and a spouse who fixes you suitable drinks in no time.
Also bear in mind that a dirty phone can wipe out a whole planet, at least if we believe the late Douglas Adams.

As long as we both shall live

I met my husband 27 years ago on April the 1st.
Since that, we haven't spent many days apart otherwise than on occasional business trips. Perhaps it's a match made in heaven, or is it the feeling of an April Fool prank, who knows? We don't always think alike, but we are always on the same side, and stubborn enough to stay together. No relationship can last that long without worse days, but I truly believe that neither of us has ever thought about packing up - I know I haven't, and he still tells me I'm his best friend.
Our culture tends to focus on falling in love and passion, and thus many people think that when the original spark disappears, it's time to move on. A few years later that new person is no longer new and exciting, and once again, you are looking for the love of your life, and this time you know it's for real. I'm not against separating or divorce if your relationship really is at the end, but don't give up too fast - humans make mistakes and you are probably not quite the same person as when you first met, so why should he/she remain the same? Alcohol or drug problems, violent behaviour or cheating are one thing, but too many people have told me they got divorced because they were like best friends... hello, seriously?
We have been very family-centered, there was always a little one to take care of and older siblings had their needs, too. Besides full-time work and household of five there was no energy left to extra activities. But one day I realized that the children could be left home alone (then 7, 15 and 18, not neglecting toddlers here). We take child-free weekends every now and then, and once again remember how much fun we used to have with nobody asking for Mum every five minutes. This is also training for when the children move out, because some couples live for the family and then find out they have nothing in common when they have house for themselves.
Even before that we had discovered another marriage-counseling tool that is easily available and not
too expensive - the dvr, e.g. a set-top box with recording capability. On working days, there's much else to do and watching tv is not a top priority, but you may still have some favourite shows you'd like to see. We record all those that we both like, and then sit the Sunday afternoon together on the couch watching tv (some back-scratching and cuddling occurs, too). I get up only to go hanging up the laundry and putting on another load, and he feeds the troops between shows - the children know this is our we-time, when we discuss the week behind and plan the next, and simply strenghen our bond as a team. The Sunday afternoons used to be the most depressive time of the week, just waiting for the Monday morning, but now it is the highlight of the week.
Your thing in common can be something completely different, but it is worth looking for! It's a terrible cliché, but if your lover is also your best friend, you can count on him/her in sickness and in health, even when the life is not a bed of roses.

Welcome to Easter mode

Easter is like an oasis, a whiff of freedom somewhere in the middle of the struggle from Christmas
to summer. Even if you're not very religious, a long holiday weekend gives us chance to spend time with our loved ones and take it easy for a while.
Children make Easter decorations, search chocolate eggs and maybe dress as little witches to go door-to-door asking for candy.
I used to be one of those effective ladies who actually change the curtains and decorate the whole house with something yellow/eggs/bunnies for Easter, but I gave up with that for a long time ago. Nowadays I'm quite happy with a little arrangement, a couple bunnies and a cat, made by my children a long time ago, and something else Easter-ish, along with some rairuoho, little pot of grass that children use to grow for Easter in Finland.
More important is the opportunity to spend four whole days with the family, have something good to eat and perhaps do something nice together.
- If you have read my other blogs, you know that this doesn't mean a lot of fuss, standing in front of the oven.
This year we are going to meet the whole extended family, grand-parents and siblings with their families, plus two cats and three excited dogs.
Otherwise we are celebrating the holidays with the traditional Easter ham (bought on discount after the Christmas and kept in the freeze), lots of chocolate and other candy, and probably a couple of good movies on dvd.
Sometimes the couch is a bit crowded (with three children + one girlfriend so far) but mostly the young ones stare into their phones and tablets, and the living room is left for us dinosaurs, whose taste in movies and tv programmes is incomprehensible for people under 21.
By the way, I'm going to watch at least The Martian. I saw it in the theatre with my older daughter, and we were really impressed - it's funny, entertaining, exciting and educating, all that in one package. So if you haven't seen it, go and get the disc - it's easy with these new ridiculous opening hours, when you can go shopping on Long Friday evening and all. When I was a child, my Grannies didn't like playing or laughing on Long Friday... we have come a long way with our Easter habits and traditions, and all change is not necessarily for the better. But Happy Easter, anyway!

Vacuum, wipe, wash and iron - and repeat

Many men seem to think that women have a special cleaning gene that makes them better in homing routines. Surprise surprise, we don't. What many of us have is an instinctual need to build a nest, and when it comes to nesting, some level of cleanliness is certainly better than a complete chaos.
On the top of this, I have been a feminist all my life and still feel like it's more my fault if we don't have a functional household - like it was my task to train my husband and children to respect and strive for weekly cleaning, scheduled meals and fresh clothes on a daily basis. An organized life is a worthy goal for most of us, but there must always be a person who tells the others when, what, how and by whom things must be done, to keep it going.
If you're lucky you may be able to get paid help for the daily routines, but even then someone must make the decisions. If a fulltime work is simply the only option, you soon notice that a huge amount of your so-called leisure time goes for boring things like cleaning, cooking, washing, ironing and in general for taking care of the home. If you have children, add to this several hours per day, first changing diapers, feeding and playing, later on helping with school and all-in-all trying to raise somewhat decent new citizens.
Women in my family have been good housekeepers - even though they were working Mum's, their houses were clean and the meals were served punctually. I decided pretty early that I'm not going to be a domestic servant in my own home: good enough is enough, and not everyone can be like Moominmamma, anyways.
Take the laundry, for example: you can spend hours and hours sorting, washing, hanging up, ironing and folding it in a special room away from your family. Or wash about 3 machineloads every Sunday, dry on coat hangers or on a clothes line in the garden (= no need to iron) - sort, put on the hangers and fold in the living room where you can watch tv and be with your family. Prefer stretch to crinkly materials and avoid colours that stain.
If you have children, make sure to teach both boys and girls to do their share of the cleaning. Your future daughter-in-law will thank you one day, and your daughter will refuse to become a slave in her own home - thus their generation will have one less problem to fight about in their relationships.
I could go on and on about this, but only one more thought for you perfect housekeepers to chew on: it's not said in the Bible or anywhere else that you'd have to wash the windows several times a year, they will just get dirty again. And if you like to change the curtains for Christmas, it's ok to let them hang from the curtain rods and leave the other curtains under - I know because I've done this several times. There is a wonderful saying in Finnish: Hullu ei huomaa ja viisas ei puhu mitään. = A stupid person won't notice and the wise one won't say anything.
Spend your time with the spouse or family, not with the vacuum, feather duster and washing machine!
