A Minority The World Forgot

My Instagram feed is, besides the U.S. politics, packed with stories about different groups and their problems - women, veterans, children, transgender people, people with all kinds of sexual  orientations (or lack of that), different races, ethnic groups and religions, competing about which one is the most oppressed and misunderstood. Observe: there's no way I'd belittle anyone's experience and my heart goes to everyone who feels bullied or discriminated for any reason. 
I simply came to think about one minority that no-one talks about these days. Do you know what these gentlemen had in common? Have you ever tried to write neatly with your left hand - there are two possible ways, of which none is good. Either you let the writing hand hang lightly on the text you just wrote and try not to smear it too much, or you turn the paper and try to write kind of above the line, which hurts your hand and the result is still not

good. The side of your hand gets dirty and people make fun of your problem. Some find it hilarious to see you write, and some say you're just pretending, because they know for a fact that people should use the right hand.
On my first day at school, the teacher ordered me to the chalk board in front of everyone and made me write my name with both my hands - when the result was obviously better with the left hand, she decided that I'd be allowed to use it for writing. Needless to say, she didn't make the right-handers to test their left hand writing. But I was still lucky, because my aunt had been forced to learn to use her right hand, although she had been clearly a left-hander even since a toddler - and still is. The chair in the other picture reminds me of the day I took the written test for my driver's license. There are thousands of class rooms equipped with this kind of furniture - good idea, and the writing board can be on either sides, but personally I have never encountered one assembled for left-handers. I passed my written test and even got the traffic signs right, but it was not easy to focus when my back started aching after the first five minutes and the papers just didn't fit on the table in any position.
Other nuisances for us are scissors, phones (especially wallet cases), buttons, zippers, knives, cake

servers, remote controls, doors, screwdrivers, screw tops, knitting and crocheting - to mention a few. The controls in most electric equipment are planned for right-handers. When I make coffee, the scale for the water amount is on the right hand side. Numeric keys are on the right side of a keyboard. There are guitars for left-handers, but not many have access to a such when they learn to play. Last but not least, it's impossible to leaf through a book or a magazine with your left hand, and I've never learned to do that with the right.
These examples are mostly first world problems, but I'm sure there are likewise challenges for left-handers in any culture. I won't even start with the view on the left hand as something bad, a hand reserved for dirty tasks. I have not heard of a language in which the

left would be associated as better or with "right" things, but in practically any culture the right is

 good, normal and, well - right. Being a left-hander must affect the way you see the world, and to a certain extent it makes your life more difficult compared with the right-handers. It can be seen as a handicap, but on the other hand, it also forces you to find solutions and work your way around many daily inconveniences. They do say that what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger - and there does seem to be a lot of famous and successful people who sign their autographs with the left hand.
Instagram-feediini tulvii, USA:n politiikan ohella, juttuja ryhmistä joilla on ongelmia - naiset, veteraanit, lapset, transsukupuoliset, erilaiset seksuaaliset suuntautumiset (tai suuntautumisen puute), eri rodut, etniset ryhmät ja uskonnot, kilpailemassa kuka on eniten sorrettu tai väärinymmärretty. Huom: en todellakaan vähättele kenenkään kokemuksia ja olen kaikkien niiden puolella, joita kiusataan tai syrjitään minkä tahansa syyn vuoksi.Tulin kuitenkin ajatelleeksi erästä vähemmistöä, jota ei ole edes mainittu pitkään aikaan.

Tiedätkö, mikä yhdistää 1. kuvan herroja? Oletko joskus yrittänyt kirjoittaa siististi vasemmalla kädellä - siihen on kaksi tapaa, joista kumpikaan ei toimi. Joko annat käden roikkua juuri kirjoitetun tekstin päällä ja yrität sotkea mahdollisimman vähän, tai käännät paperia ja yrität ikään kuin kirjoittaa rivin yläpuolelle, mikä sattuu käteen ja tulos on silti huono. Kädensyrjä sotkeentuu ja ihmiset nauravat ongelmallesi. Joistakin on hillittömän huvittavaa katsoa kun kirjoitat, ja toiset taas uskovat että teeskentelet, koska kaikki tietävät että oikea käsi on parempi.
Ensimmäisenä päivänä koulussa opettaja pyysi minut taululle kaikkien eteen ja käski kirjoittaa nimeni kummallakin kädellä - kun vasemmalla tuli selvästi parempaa jälkeä, hän päätti että saisin käyttää sitä kirjoittamiseen. Lienee turha mainita, että oikeakätisten ei tarvinnut testata vasemmalla kirjoittamista. Olin silti onnekas, koska tätini oli pakotettu kirjoittamaan oikealla, vaikka hän oli ollut vasenkätinen taaperosta saakka - ja on edelleen. Toisen kuvan tuoli muistuttaa siitä, kun olin autokoulun teoriakokeessa. Tuollaisia on tuhansissa luokkahuoneissa ja idea on hyvä, ja pöytäosa voi olla kummalla puolella tahansa, mutta itse en ole koskaan nähnyt livenä vasenkätisten versiota.

 Pääsin läpi kokeesta ja liikennemerkitkin menivät hyvin, mutta oli vaikea keskittyä kun selkää särki jo muutaman minuutin päästä ja kysymyspaperi ei sopinut pöytätasolle mitenkään päin.
Muita harminaiheita vasureille ovat sakset, puhelimet (varsinkin lompakkomallin kotelot), napit, vetoketjut, veitset, kakkulapiot, kaukosäätimet, ovet, ruuvimeisselit, kierrekorkit, neulominen ja virkkaaminen - muutamia mainitakseni. Sähkölaitteiden nappulat on suunniteltu oikeakätisille. Kun keitän kahvia, pannun mitta-asteikko näkyy vain jos se on oikeassa kädessä. Numeronäppäimet ovat näppäimistön oikealla puolella. On olemassa vasenkätisten kitaroita, mutta harvalla on sellainen käytössä kun opettelee soittamaan. On mahdotonta selata nopeasti vasemmalla kädellä kirjaa tai lehteä, enkä ole koskaan oikein oppinut tekemään sitä oikealla.
Nämä esimerkit ovat enimmäkseen rikkaiden maiden ongelmia, mutta olen varma että vasenkätiset kohtaavat samantapaisia haasteita kaikissa kulttuureissa. En edes aloita siitä, että vasenta kättä pidetään jotenkin pahana ja se varataan likaisia asioita varten. En ole koskaan kuullut kielestä, jossa vasen olisi parempi tai liittyisi "oikeisiin" asioihin, mutta käytännössä kaikissa kulttuureissa oikea on hyvä, normi ja - tosiaan, oikea. Vasenkätisyys vaikuttaa pakostakin siihen millaisena näet maailman, ja se tekee tietyssä määrin elämästä vaikeampaa kuin oikeakätisillä. Se voi olla este, mutta toisaalta se myös pakottaa keksimään ratkaisuja ja löytämään keinoja selvitä monista arjen hankaluuksista. Sanonta kuuluu, että mikä ei tapa se vahvistaa, ja toden totta maailmassa on paljon kuuluisia ja menestyneitä ihmisiä, jotka kirjoittavat nimikirjoituksensa vasemmalla kädellä.
