No-nos for a practical home

When it comes to home and living arrangements, I go for easy. No high-maintain decorations, gardening or unnecessary cleaning for me, thank you. Now I'll tell about some other things that I find unpractical and rather avoid in my home.
Of course, black as theme colour. Not just that it makes the space smaller and kills the lighting, it also shows fingerprints, dust and everything that gathers on open levels. With too much black, your living room may look like a scene in a horror movie - believe me, I googled many black living rooms before I found this not-scary shot. Black in other rooms is even worse, in bedroom it's scary and a black kitchen would require a daily professional cleaner.
This living room looks comfortable and beautiful, but I see several problems. The rug looks like it's difficult to vacuum. The tables are light and they could be moved for cleaning, but if the cats wouldn't drop the vase, it would fall every time you want to rest your feet on the table. (And the vase is in the way if you'd watch tv sitting on the chair.) The cushions look great, but in my home they'd first end up on the floor and then in a closet, after that I had fluffed and arranged them about five times. And last but not least, the blanket - soft, pretty and comfortable when you put it there. But sooner or later you drop coffee or food on it, a zip (or cat's nails) get stuck on it and make holes, in a few months it won't be so pretty anymore -  and long before that you've had enough with fluffing and folding it every single time you get off the couch. Living rooms are for living and relaxation, not an extra daily decorating job.
Now you ask what's wrong with that nice, grey and white kitchen? In general, it's pretty ok. But here's one thing that many kitchen planners don't seem to realise, based on how common it is: the door in the back leads probably to a bathroom or sauna area,  and/or the back door of the house. Picture yourself cooking and setting the table, and the rest of the family going back and forth, perhaps someone coming in via mudroom with toddlers or a couple of dogs. A small thing, but a nuisance that can and should be avoided.
Another modern and beautiful kitchen, surely nothing to complain about here? Take a closer look. The microwave is too high up to be safe, only a tall person could take down a hot soup bowl from there. The island doesn't actually serve any real purpose, other than that there are probably cabinets or drawers on the other side. The high chairs look uncomfortable for adults and unsafe for children. And the worst problem when it comes to being practical: when you set the table for a meal, where you take the stuff from? Right, from the fridge. Imagine yourself walking around that island day in, day out, carrying food and drinks, then carrying the dishes to the dishwasher that I think is beside the sink, surprise: you walk around the island once again. Why do they have these islands, when you could have the same storage space and counter next to a wall, or otherwise out of the way? In my home it would take a few weeks before every meal was eaten in front of the tv - you'd anyway fix the plate at the fridge door, so why not to carry it to the living room when you are on the move.
Laundry room or whatever you call the space for washing, ironing and other household chores. This one looks nice, but actually it's not very practical. I don't see where the dirty clothes are kept - hopefully not in the bag, or in the far too small baskets on the shelves? The counter is beautiful, but it doesn't serve for ironing, and the cabinets are quite small and don't give much storage space, perhaps just for some cleaning products. Some houses have very big laundry rooms, but I find it unnecessary - I'd rather have that space for living area, not for folding laundry.
So what is my solution for this - no "room" at all! We do have a small area next to the bathroom and sauna, where we keep laundry baskets and the washer. The space is like a small hallway and it also contains the cats' litter box, foldable drying racks, closets for towels, cleaning products and stuff, racks for gardening clothes etc., plus the heat pump that provides warm water and heats the house.
A foldable ironing board is also there, but those of you who have read my blog for a longer time know that it's not much in use. I refuse to spend my Saturday evenings by the washer like my mother used to do - I do the laundry in our house, but the washer can do the job without my presence. I put the clothes in, then later pick them out and sort them in the living room, watching tv at the same time. I take them out to dry or put them on the racks, but I'm glad not to have a separate room for this task, away from the family. If I'm in mood for ironing (not too often), I put the board in front of the tv. Of course, it wouldn't have to be me who stays in the laundry room, but why should anyone?
There can't be very many people who haven't seen the tv show Love It Or List It. Those families must always have open concept, huge kitchen island, lots of storage space, walk-in-closets, and of course, rather more bathrooms than family members. Who cleans all those baths? Do the couples brush their teeth holding hands, because a master bedroom must have a bathroom with two sinks? Why not two toilets next to each other, while you're at it? Who can relax in a bath in the ensuite, knowing that the kids are fooling around somewhere in the house? We have one bathroom, located next to the living room and kitchen, and I could wash my hair in the mornings and yet hear what was happening elsewhere in the house with the kids doing their morning routine. The bedroom picture represents spa-concept, white and wooden colours, bathroom within the bedroom. I can picture the idea of shared bubble baths, or having a shower before a romantic moment. But notice also the toilet next to the bath, separated from the bed only by a glass wall - these spouses share literally everything.

☆☆☆
Mitäs vikaa on mukavassa valko-harmaassa keittiössä?
☆☆☆
