Beauty has always been a question of taste, and this goes also for decoration. What's stylish today, is aged and too common in ten years. Retro is hot these days, but those of us who lived the original decade, may not totally agree, either.
This home was presented in a magazine as an example of perfect 1970's style - no such thing as too much colours, patterns or things! Some of my friends really lived in houses looking very much like that - I can appreciate the effort, but that's not for me, anymore.
My home economy book's cover presents a kitchen much like this. Look at all that yellow, brown and red - natural, bright colours were pop, and I bet that the same house's living room was green and orange. My parents built their house 1978, with bright grass green living room, orange kitchen, pink toilet and master bedroom in sort of orange-brown and very dark green. I'm still grateful someone had sense to make the bathroom white and build the sauna with natural wooden colours.
My room looked a bit like this. I had to really put my foot down to get the walls painted light green - I had preferred white or some very light pastel colour, but I gave up with that when the adults accepted not painting one wall with a dark "effect colour". That was the state of the art in the late 1970's, and I was terribly old-fashioned when I wouldn't have it, no matter what they said.
Our bathroom was ok, but visiting friends you could meet an orange toilet, cherry red or purple sink, green tiles - and the best, all of them in the same place! My parents' house has been redecorated later on, and everything else is gone except for the pink toilet walls. My mother can't understand what went into her when painting those rooms, but it just was fashionable those days.
There was also another one, even worse thing that was hot in the 1970-1980's - huge wallpaper patterns, with of course, bright colours. Fortunately, this didn't lure my parents, but I could still have nightmares remembering some bedroom walls at my friends' places, with huge flowers and plants, and lots colours so that you hardly saw the furniture for the walls.
Bright colours have been back for long, this green interior is from a new school building.
This orange wonderland gives me headache, and it's also from a new school.
The two previous pictures and this very modern building remind me of the school I went to as teenager - a rhapsody in dark blue, bright yellow and orange, chocolate brown, pink, purple and christmas red, mixed with ten shades of green. Apparently children need strong colours, but I'm surely not the only one who decided to never have such colours when I get to choose.
When my age group started decorating our own homes, the trend turned more and more to white - a young adult wants to have something very different compared with the childhood home. Everything went white, then the next decade's new adults wanted to have big patterns and lots of colours, because they didn't remember the 1970's. Now we live in the era of white, grey and black.
I won't even try to guess what the next trend will be like, but you won't see me redecorating in the latest fashion. Unless it's the 1990's peaceful combination of different shades of white and light wooden colours - in that case, count me in. My brother once said that all our homes start to look like each other sooner or later, and he is absolutely right. When I read home magazines or choose wallpapers and carpets, I go for colours like cream, birch, nougat, light grey, seasoned with a glimpse of light blue, turquoise or rose. Call me old-fashioned, but those are the colours of my twenties, and I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for that style. My mother-in-law's living room hasn't essentially changed since 1996, but it is practical, homey and comforting. No need to fix what ain't broken!

Kauneus on makuasia, ja se pätee myös sisustukseen. Mikä on nyt tyylikästä, on kymmenen vuoden päästä vanhanaikaista ja liian tavanomaista. Retro on nyt kova sana, mutta me jotka muistamme ne alkuperäiset vuosikymmenet, emme aina ole yhtä ihastuneita.

Ensimmäisen kuvan kirjava koti oli lehdessä esimerkkinä täydellisestä 1970-luvun tyylistä - kun ei voinut olla liikaa värejä, kuvioita ja tavaraa! Muutama kaveri asui hyvin tuon näköisessä kodissa ja voin arvostaa ajankuvan luomista, mutta tuo tyyli ei ole minun juttuni.

Köksän kirjani kansikuva muistutti seuraavan kuvan keittiötä - katso mikä keltaisen, ruskean ja punaisen yhdistelmä kun kirkkaat värit olivat pop, ja voisin lyödä vetoa että saman talon olohuone oli vihreä ja oranssi. Vanhempieni talo valmistui 1978 ja siellä oli kirkas ruohonvihreä olohuone, oranssi keittiö, pinkki vessa ja oranssinruskehtava/tummanvihreä päämakuuhuone. Onneksi jollain oli järkeä tehdä pesuhuoneesta valkoinen ja käyttää saunassa vaaleita puun sävyjä.

Minun huoneeni tyyli muistutti seuraavaa kuvaa. Kävin kunnon väännön, jotta seinät maalattiin vaaleanvihreiksi - olisin halunnut valkoista tai hyvin vaaleaa pastellia, mutta tein kompromissin kun aikuiset suostuivat siihen, että ei maalata yhtä seinää tummalla "tehostevärillä". Se oli viimeistä huutoa 1970-luvun lopulla, ja olin kamalan vanhanaikainen, kun en hyväksynyt sitä muiden vänkäämisestä huolimatta.

Meidän kylpyhuone oli ok, mutta kaverien luona saattoi olla oranssi vessanpönttö, kirsikanpunainen tai violetti pesuallas, vihreitä laattoja - tai mikä parasta, ne kaikki yhdessä! Vanhempieni talo on sittemmin remontoitu ja kaikki muu vaihtui, jäljellä on vain pinkki vessan seinä. Äiti ei voi ymmärtää mikä häneen meni, kun seiniä aikanaan maalattiin, mutta se oli silloin muodikasta.

Oli myös toinen, vielä pahempi 1970-1980-luvun trendi - isot tapettikuviot kirkkaissa väreissä. Se ei onneksi houkutellut vanhempiani, mutta voisin vieläkin nähdä painajaisia joistakin makuuhuoneen seinistä kaverien luona, valtavia kukkia ja kasveja, ja värejä niin ettei edes huonekaluja erottanut.

Kirkkaat värit palasivat jo aikoja sitten, seuraavan kuvan tummanvihreä sisustus on uudesta koulurakennuksesta, samoin päänsärkyä aiheuttava oranssi ihmemaa.

Keltalattiainen moderni rakennus ja edelliset kuvat muistuttavat omasta yläkoulustani - tummansinisen, kirkkaan oranssin ja keltaisen, suklaanruskean, pinkin, violetin ja joulunpunaisen rapsodia, mausteena kymmenen vihreän sävyä. Ilmeisesti lapsille kuuluu olla kirkkaita värejä, mutta en varmasti ole ainoa, joka päätti ettei ikinä valitse samanlaisia omaan kotiinsa.

Kun ikäluokkani alkoi sisustaa omia kotejaan, trendi kääntyi vaaleaan - nuori aikuinen haluaa erilaista kuin lapsuudenkodissa. Kaikki muuttui valkoiseksi, kunnes seuraavan vuosikymmenen uudet aikuiset halusivat taas kuvioita ja värejä, koska he eivät muistaneet 1970-lukua. Nyt on menossa on valko-harmaa-musta kausi.

En edes yritä arvata mitä tulee seuraavaksi, mutta minua ei nähdä sisustamassa trendien mukaan. Paitsi jos kyseessä on 1990-luvun rauhallinen valkoisen ja vaalean puun liitto, sitten olen mukana. Veljeni totesi kerran, että kaikki meidän kodit alkavat aina vähitellen muistuttaa toisiaan, ja hän osui naulan kantaan. Kun luen sisustuslehtiä tai valitsen tapettia ja mattoja, haen aina kermaa, koivua, nugaata tai vaaleaa harmaata, maustettuna ripauksella vaaleansinistä, turkoosia tai vaaleaa punaista. Sanokaa vain vanhanaikaiseksi, mutta ne olivat muotia kun olin parikymppinen, ja sen ajan tyyli on aina lähellä sydäntäni. Anoppini olohuone ei ole juurikaan muuttunut vuoden 1996 jälkeen, mutta se on käytännöllinen, kodikas ja mukava. Toimivaa ei kannata korjata!
