Music makes the world go' round

This time, I'll discuss a few of my favourite music artists. We begin with a band that was one of the biggest ever, until it's frontman was taken away far too early. Many famous singers have died young, but I'm talking about the man, the myth, the legend - Freddie Mercury who died in 1991.

These four nice chaps aka Queen filled stadiums and concert fields in the 1980's (one night 250000 people), and they still are one of the best selling music artists. They can be called a rock band, but their music is a mixture of hard rock, glam and progressive rock, spiced with classical influence. Freddie's special, recognisable voice and Brian May's guitar, with songs that are all masterpieces in their own right, make a unique combination, and drummer Roger Taylor and bassist John Deacon finish the experience. Unfortunately I never saw Freddie on stage, but Adam Lambert made a respectful tribute to him on tour in Helsinki 2018. If you're not familiar with Queen, try and begin with Innuendo, It's a Kind of Magic or Another One Bites The Dust. You can't have missed We Are The Champions, if you live on Earth.

 

You know what Robbie Williams looks like, so no picture of him. I was never a fan of Take That, but I really like Robbie's solo career performances. I usually hate arrogance, also in artists, but Freddie Mercury could afford it (and was simultaneously shy, strutting around was a role he put on), and Robbie has the same endearing attitude - look, Mom, I'm here on stage! In his prime, he had 125000 people under his feet in Knebworth, three nights in a row. I loved how he took the crowd's applause, smiling self-ironically "it's just me, but you love me". His music may not be as diverse and multi-layered as Queen's, but it's catchy, beautiful and well-made, and his voice is also kind of distinctive and special. To get to know Robbie's music, I suggest Let Me Entertain You, She's Madonna, Me and My Shadow or Swings Both Ways.

Next choice is the Swedish GES, according to themselves a sporadically existing group.  Their biggest heyday was in the middle of the 1990's, then they had a pause to return shortly in the beginning of 2000, and made re-return in 2017 with sold out performances, and a full tour in summer 2018. I have loved them since the 1990's, and they still rocked the middle-aged audience when I was there - even my husband was impressed though he has joked about "my" Swedes for 25 years. Anders Glenmark, Thomas "Orup" Eriksson and Niklas Strömstedt (see where GES comes from?) also have their own careers as musicians, song-writers and producers, but together they are magical. You can start with Hon är min, Stanna världen en stund and Den andra kvinnan, but my new favourite is När jag var han, remake of another artist's song for the tv show Så mycket bättre (reality show The Best Singers, in Finland Vain elämää).

GES call themselves the oldest boy band in the world, but the true holder of that title is Deep Purple. They started 1968, had a pause for 8 years and started again 1984, and are still going strong. The assembly has changed forth and back, drummer Ian Paice was in the original line up, bassist Roger Glover and singer Ian Gillan came along in 1969. The current squad has been together the longest, guitarist Steve Morse came 1994 and keyboardist Don Airey 2002. In 50+ years, the band has made progressive hard rock, playing with blues, classical and psychedelic impressions - as Roger Glover said in an interview, DP was never meant to be (only) a heavy metal band. I wasted most of my life only knowing that the band existed, but when I finally saw them in 2017, it was like a religious experience. I saw them also 2018, and I do hope for one more chance, considering the pandemic and the gentlemen's age. You could try All I Got Is You, All The Time In The World, Throw My Bones or Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming ❤, or anything from their 21 studio albums.

In the end a quote from Ian Gillan, from the time when records and record shops still tried to compete with legal and illegal streaming. I buy my music online and have Spotify, but despite of my best efforts, Ian hasn't showed up at my mother's house or mine 🤔😳😊😍.

Nyt kerron muutamasta suosikkiartististani. Aloitetaan bändistä, joka oli yksi kaikkien aikojen suurimmista, kunnes sen keulakuva lähti aivan liian varhain. Monet laulajat ovat kuolleet nuorena, mutta tämä mies, myytti ja legenda tunnettiin nimellä Freddie Mercury ja hän kuoli 1991.

Kuvan neljä mukavaa kaveria eli Queen täytti stadioneita ja konserttialueita 1980-luvulla (250000 yhtenä iltana), ja he kuuluvat yhä kaikkien aikojen myydyimpien musiikkiartistien joukkoon. Queen on rock, mutta sen musiikki on sekoitus hard rockia, glamouria ja progea, maustettuna klassisen musiikin vaikutteilla. Freddien erityinen, tunnistettava ääni, Brian Mayn kitara ja mestarilliset kappaleet luovat ainutlaatuisen kokonaisuuden, ja rumpali Roger Taylor sekä basisti John Deacon täydentävät kokemuksen. Ikävä kyllä en koskaan nähnyt Freddietä lavalla, mutta Adam Lambert teki hänelle hienosti kunniaa Helsingin keikalla 2017. Tiedät kyllä miltä Robbie Williams näyttää, joten hänestä ei ole lähikuvaa. En ollut Take That -fani, mutta pidän Robbien soolouran esityksistä. Yleensä inhoan ylimielisyyttä, myös artisteissa, mutta Freddie Mercuryllä oli siihen varaa (ja hän oli silti ujo, kukkoilu oli vain rooli), ja Robbiella on sama hellyttävä asenne - katso, äiti, minä olen täällä lavalla!  Huikeimmillaan Knebworthissä 125000 ihmistä palvoi maata hänen jalkojensa alla, kolme iltaa peräkkäin. Hän kuittasi taputukset, hymyillen itseironisesti "minä se vain olen, kiva kun tykkäätte". Robbien musiikki ei ole yhtä monisyistä ja -kerroksista kuin Queenin, mutta se on tarttuvaa, kaunista ja hyvin tehtyä, ja myös hänen äänensä on tietyllä tapaa erottuva. Ehdotan kuunteluun Let Me Entertain You, She's Madonna, Me and My Shadow tai Swings Both Ways.

Seuraavaksi esittelyyn tulee ruotsalainen GES, omien sanojensa mukaan ajoittaisesti olemassaoleva yhtye. Heidän huippuaikansa oli 1990-luvun puolivälissä, sitten tuli lyhyt paluu 2000-luvun alussa ja uusi paluu 2017, loppuunmyydyin esityksin, ja täysi kiertue 2018. Olen pitänyt heistä 1990-luvulta asti, ja keski-ikäinen yleisö rokkasi aivan kuin silloin ennen kun viimein näin heidät keikalla - jopa mies innostui, vaikka on 25 vuotta vinoillut "minun" ruotsalaisistani. Anders Glenmark, Thomas "Orup" Eriksson ja Niklas Strömstedt (näetkö mistä GES tulee?) ovat kaikki luoneet pitkän uran muusikoina, lauluntekijöitä ja tuottajina, mutta yhdessä he ovat maagisia. Tutustumiseen suosittelen vaikkapa kappaleita Hon är min, Stanna världen en stund ja Den andra kvinnan, mutta uusin suosikkini on När jag var han, Ruotsin Vain elämää - tv-sarjaan tehty uusintaversio toisen artistin kappaleesta.

Kokoonpano on muuttunut monesti, rumpali Ian Paice on alkuperäisestä ryhmästä, basisti Roger Glover ja laulaja Ian Gillan tulivat mukaan jo 1969. Nykyinen tiimi on kaikkein pitkäikäisin, kitaristi Steve Morse tuli 1994 ja kosketinsoittaja Don Airey 2002. Bändi on tehnyt progressiivista rokkia yli 50 vuotta, leikitellen bluesin, klassisen musiikin ja psykedeelisen rokin vaikutteilla - kuten Roger Glover totesi haastattelussa, Deep Purplen ei koskaan pitänyt olla (vain) heavybändi. Hukkasin ison osan elämästäni, kun vain tiesin että bändi on olemassa, ja kun viimein näin heidät livenä 2017, se oli kuin uskonnollinen kokemus. Olin keikalla myös 2018, ja nyt voi vain toivoa vielä yhtä mahdollisuutta, kun huomioi pandemian ja herrojen korkean iän. Kokeile kuunnella All The Time In The World, All I Got Is You, Throw My Bones, Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming tai mikä tahansa 21 studioalbumin kappaleista.
