Technology for all ages

Older generations usually think that the younger ones are spoiled, childish and know nothing about life. The younger ones think that the elders don't understand technology. But whose technology are we talking about? I took my first it-lesson with a Commodore 64, which was an advanced computer at a time. I wrote my master's thesis with a computer that used floppy discs - needed many of them because you could only have 10-15 pages of text on each disk.

The first years of my working life were balancing between PC's and MacIntosh worlds, which were not compatible. During my adult years, I have learned to use VCR, CD, microwave, cell phone, digital camera, memory sticks, digital boxes, the ever-changing computer generations, smart phone models, social media and all kinds of apps, and it's just expanding. No-one knows what kind of technics we'll use in ten years from now, and after that, we can't even imagine.

Young people think 50+ are the boomers, but actually many in my generation understood the computer world better than the young - we had to know something about of how everything works, because the user interfaces were something completely else in our time. When you bought a device or a new program, you also got a huge handbook and had to do all kinds of tricks to be able to use them, because they didn't recognize each other the way the software does today, and the computer didn't take you through the process. The same goes for televisions, VCR's, digital boxes and all other equipment that needed settings or configurations.

The last time I bought a laptop, the young salesman looked sceptical because I didn't want to buy the initialization service. All my adult life I have done most of my work by a computer, and using them just gets easier when the software becomes more intelligent. I know nothing about programming, but neither do most of the young people, too - the technology is made for us, and you don't need to know how it works to be able to use it. As the science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke wisely pointed out: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

Maybe I'm a stone age remain because I can't write with my thumbs, but I still know a thing or two about how to write a decent document, and can learn to use the latest social media gadget if I want to. If you are 20+, know this: the generation after you is going to find you just as technology-incompatible as you think about us before you, and the same will happen to them and their children. When the wheel was invented, I bet the elders thought it was an unnecessary gadget, and the young ones thought that the old ones wouldn't even know what to do with it. When you're middle-aged, the help desk will always think that your it-problem is a picnic error (problem in chair, not in computer). But technology should be an aid, not a problem, and thus they should just create device that take human limitations into account and prevent user errors.

Vanhemmat sukupolvet ajattelevat, että nuoret ovat hemmoteltuja ja lapsellisia, eivätkä tiedä mitään elämästä. Nuoret taas uskovat, että vanhemmat eivät tajua tekniikkaa. Mutta kenen teknologiasta puhutaan? Minä kävin ensimmäisen tietokonekurssini Commodore 64:llä, joka oli aikanaan edistyksellinen laite. Maisterintutkinnon pro gradu -työn kirjoitin koneella, joka käytti lerppuja - niitä piti olla monta, koska yhdelle mahtui vain 10-15 sivua tekstiä.

Ensimmäiset vuodet työelämässä olivat tasapainoilua PC-koneiden ja MacIntoshin maailmojen välillä, jotka olivat täysin erillään. Aikuisikäni aikana olen opetellut käyttämään videonauhuria, cd-laitteita, mikroaaltouunia, kännykkää, digikameraa, muistitikkuja, digibokseja, vaihtuvia tietokonesukupolvia, älypuhelimia, somea ja vaikka mitä muita sovelluksia, ja lisää tulee koko ajan. Kukaan ei tiedä, millaista tekniikkaa käytämme kymmenen vuoden päästä, ja siitä eteenpäin ei osaa edes kuvitella.

Nuorten mielestä yli viisikymppiset ovat boomereita, mutta todellisuudessa monet minun sukupolvestani tiesivät tietokoneista enemmän kuin nykyiset nuoret - meidän oli pakko ymmärtää jotain niiden toiminnasta, koska käyttöliittymät olivat jotain ihan muuta kuin nykyiset. Kun ostit uuden laitteen tai ohjelman, mukana tuli paksu käsikirja ja piti tehdä monenlaisia temppuja ennen kuin niitä voi käyttää, koska ne eivät tunnistaneet toisiaan niin kuin nykyiset ohjelmat, eikä kone neuvonut prosessin kulkua kuten nykyään. Sama pätee televisioihin, videoihin, digibokseihin ja kaikkiin laitteisiin, jotka tarvitsivat asetuksia tai yhteensovittamista muiden laitteiden kanssa.

Kun viimeksi ostin läppärin, nuori miesmyyjä näytti epäileväiseltä, kun en halunnut ostaa käyttöönottopalvelua. Koko aikuisikäni olen tehnyt suurimman osan työstäni tietokoneella, ja niiden käyttö vain helpottuu, kun ohjelmista tulee älykkäämpiä. En tiedä mitään ohjelmoinnista, mutta ei tiedä suurin osa nuoristakaan - teknologia on ihmistä varten, ja sitä täytyy voida käyttää, vaikka ei tiedä miten se toimii. Tieteiskirjailija Arthur C. Clarke on sanonut sattuvasti: "Huipputekniikkaa on mahdoton erottaa taikuudesta."

Olen ehkä kivikautinen jäänne, kun en osaa kirjoittaa pelkillä peukaloilla, mutta tiedän yhtä ja toista kunnollisen asiakirjan laatimisesta, ja voin opetella käyttämään uusinta somevillitystä jos haluan. Jos olet parikymppinen, muista tämä: sinun jälkeesi tuleva sukupolvi pitää sinua yhtä teknologia-yhteensopimattomana kuin sinä meitä edelläsi olevia, ja samoin tulee käymään heille ja heidän lapsilleen. Kun pyörä keksittiin, lyön vetoa, että se oli vanhojen mielestä turha kapine, ja nuoret sanoivat, että vanhat eivät edes osaisi käyttää sitä. Kun olet keski-ikäinen, help desk olettaa ilman muuta, että it-ongelmasi syynä on picnic-error (vika tuolissa, ei koneessa). Mutta teknologian pitäisi olla apuväline, ei ongelma, ja siksi pitäisi tehdä laitteita, jotka huomioivat inhimilliset rajoitukset ja ehkäisevät käyttäjästä johtuvien virheiden syntyä.
