How to (not) end a show

Middle-aged people know the infamous turn in the tv show Dallas, when Pamela woke up and her dead husband Bobby just came from shower, a whole season having been her dream. But many other shows have provided just as easy - or deep, however you see it - turnpoints and especially endings.

Did you watch Lost? I did, and together with half the world, had no idea how the end should have been understood. Most thought that characters had been dead all the time,  that the mysterious island was their purgatory, and the end in a church meant they got to go to heaven. Ten years after the end, the writers told that the group did survive the plane crash and lived on the island, but in the church they were dead, and helped each other to the other side. Sounds a bit odd, when even the makers couldn't really explain it understandably.

Then for something much more recent - Game of Thrones. The success was huge for seven years - then the production team decided to make the last season so bad that no-one would be sorry for the show being cancelled. Book readers like yours truly still wait for a couple of books to the series, and it remains to be seen how the original story will end. But the last season was lots of hype, scheming and preparing for the greatest battle ever, and then the last episode that just, well, died down. I have reread the books a couple of time after the show, actively trying to forget - actually, I do want to remember Peter Dinklage as Tyrion and Diana Rigg's Olenna Tyrell, but everything else can go. Show fans even collected names to demand a retake of the last season, and I get the pain.

True Blood was the thing before GoT - vampires, blood, violence, scheming and a bumpy love story. It, too, was based on a book series, but even more loosely than GoT. Here the problem is that the first 4 seasons very pretty good, just like the books. But then both run out of ideas - the books get worse and worse, and the show became more and more embarrassing, and the only thing to create interest was 'viking vampire sex god' Eric Northman, played by Alexander Skarsgård. In the end, the show had hardly anything to do with the books - in the last scene, the visibly pregnant heroine's husband is played by an extra who 'had strong arms' - Sookie had had several love interests, but they didn't want to choose any of them for the "happy ending". The books end in a completely different way, but even there the loose ends are tied up in way that most readers were furious about.

Vampires have been upfront in many ways - here one more story. The Vampire Diaries (left) is actually better than the books it is based on, and it even ended beautifully, if you don't mind the slight incredibility and from-top-of-the-hat solutions. But hey, it's about vampires! What bothers me is that it's spin-off The Originals (right) was better, but it was ended too soon, and too sadly. When you have followed 1000 years old, immortal and omnificent vampire siblings for a long time, it's not fair that the main character suddenly decides it's time to kill himself, leaving behind an orphan daughter and a love interest he'd promised to show the world, and be her 'not first, but last love'.

Next on my list is Revolution. It told about a world where electricity stops working, and described pretty well the consequences, when modern people must survive without everything that electricity enables in our daily life. Governments crash, the strongest take over, little people try to make it and new leaders emerge. The show was cancelled after two seasons, and pretty much everything was left open - the story could have continued for a long time, the mystery with the electricity was just opening up, and the fans yarned for answers, both for the scientific issues, and on personal level for the main characters. The producers provided yet a hyped "ending" - a comic strip in four parts - not even a bad joke, but a slap in the face of a devoted fan base.

Blacklist still goes on, but its former glory is long gone. The first two seasons about a FBI analyst working with a notorious criminal who helps finding the Most Wanted-listers was fascinating - the crime stories were the surface, but underneath was their personal history: who is she, and who is he really, is he her father or not, who (and why) hired the man to court and marry her, and so on. Many big questions are still open (in 8th season) and the relationship has been turned around multiple times - I find it hard to care anymore, and nowadays I just hop through the episodes, looking for some answers. James Spader as the Concierge of Crime helps, though 🤣.

Last but not least I pick up Los Serrano, a family-friendly Spanish show about a newlywed couple with his and her children living under the same roof, with a bunch of relatives, friends and colleagues who constantly get involved with everything. I really liked the show and cared about the characters (there are 8 seasons and 147 long episodes😳), and eagerly waited what would happen to them, especially the children when they grow up. The last season first seemed to tie up the loose ends and give happily-ever-after for most people, but then things started going wild. In the end, Diego the father was about to take his life - and then he woke up, his wife Lucia (dead a year ago) in bed next to him, smiling, and it was the morning after their wedding - the Dallas trick! They got up, went to kitchen and found the children - the whole show had been Diego's dream. It was kind of funny how the child actors tried to look much younger (and smaller 🤣), but otherwise the ending solution felt really stupid - did they just run out of ideas?

Luckily, there's always fan fiction to turn to. You may find very interesting alternative stories and endgames, by people who are not happy with the original story, or want to add something that's still canon, keeping the official facts. Some stories which pick up from where the writers left the story, or create a complete underworld besides the show script. The best ficcers may have seen a left-out scene or a what if-idea, and create a plot with new characters, dealings and consequences, filling out some time periods or giving more flesh to the bones of an episode - many of them are so convincing, that you start wondering whether some event happened in the official narrative or if it was a fanfic. Revolution was cancelled 2014, and I still read newly-written stories about the characters.

Katsoitko Lostin? Minä katsoin, ja yhdessä puolen maailman kanssa ihmettelin, miten loppu olisi pitänyt tulkita. Moni uskoi, että henkilöt olivat olleet kuolleita, että mystinen saari oli heidän kiirastulensa, ja loppu kirkossa tarkoitti pääsyä taivaaseen. Kymmenen vuotta myöhemmin käsikirjoittajat selittivät, että hahmot olivat selvinneet lento-onnettomuudesta ja eläneet saarella, mutta lopun kirkkokohtauksessa kaikki olivat kuolleita ja auttoivat toisiaan siirtymään rajan yli. Kuulostaa kovin vaikealta, kun eivät tekijät itsekään osanneet selittää asiaa uskottavasti.

Sitten tuoreempi sarja, Game of Thrones. Se oli huikea menestys seitsemän vuotta, ja sitten tuottajat päättivät tehdä viimeisestä kaudesta niin surkean, että kukaan ei jäisi kaipaamaan kun sarja lopetetaan. Lukijat kuten minä odotamme vielä kahta viimeistä kirjaa, ja jää nähtäväksi, miten alkuperäinen tarina päättyy. Mutta sarjan viimeinen kausi oli melkoista hypetystä, juonittelua ja valmistautumista kaikkien aikojen taisteluun - ja sitten loppu vain lässähti. Olen lukenut kirjat taas muutaman kerran sarjan jälkeen, yrittäen unohtaa - tosin haluan muistaa Peter Dinklagen Tyrionin ja Diana Riggin Olenna Tyrellin, muu saa mennä. Fanit jopa keräsivät nimiä vetoomukseen, että viimeinen kausi tehtäisiin uusiksi, ja ymmärrän tuskan.

True Blood oli iso juttu ennen GoT'ia - vampyyrejä, verta, väkivaltaa, juonittelua ja töyssyinen rakkaustarina. Tässä ongelma oli, että 4 ensimmäistä kautta olivat hyviä, kuten myös ensimmäiset kirjatkin. Sitten loppuvat ideat - kirjat muuttuvat yhä huonommiksi, ja tv-sarja herättää yhä enemmän myötähäpeää, ja ainoa kiinnostava asia on 'viikinkivampyyriseksijumala' Eric Northman, jota esittää Alexander Skarsgård. Lopussa sarjalla ei ole enää juuri mitään yhteistä kirjojen kanssa - loppukohtauksessa näkyvästi raskaana olevan sankarittaren miestä esittää avustaja 'jolla oli voimakkaat käsivarret' - Sookiella oli ollut sarjassa useitakin miehiä, mutta ketään nimettyä hahmoa ei haluttu mukaan "onnelliseen loppuun". Kirjasarja loppuu aivan eri tavalla, mutta sekin ratkaisu sai fanien yksimielisen tuomion.

Vampyyrit ovat olleet viime aikoina esillä, ja tässä vielä toinen tarina. The Vampire Diaries (vasen kuva) on parempi kuin kirjat, joihin se perustuu, ja loppukin on kaunis, jos et anna tietyn epäuskottavuuden ja hatusta tempaistujen ratkaisujen haitata. Mutta hei, vampyyrejä! Tässä universumissa minua risoo se, että sisarsarja The Originals (kuva oikealla) oli parempi, ja se loppui liian aikaisin ja liian surullisesti. Kun on seurannut 1000 vuotta vanhojen, kuolemattomien ja kaikkivoipien sisarusten elämää pitkään, ei ole reilua, että päähenkilö yhtäkkiä päättää tappaa itsensä, jättäen jälkeensä orvon tyttären ja rakastetun, jolle oli luvannut näyttää maailmaa ja olla 'ei ensimmäinen, mutta viimeinen rakkaus'.

Seuraava listalla on Revolution. Se kertoi maailmasta, jossa sähkö lakkaa toimimasta, ja kuvasi varsin hyvin seurauksia, kun nykyajan ihmiset yrittävät selvitä ilman kaikkea, mitä sähkö tekee mahdolliseksi nykyajan elämässä. Hallitukset kaatuvat, vahvat ottavat vallan, tavalliset ihmiset kärsivät ja ilmestyy uudenlaisia johtajia. Sarja lopetettiin kahden kauden jälkeen, ja jokseenkin kaikki jäi auki - tarina olisi voinut jatkua vielä pitkään, sähkön mysteeri oli juuri selviämässä, ja fanit janosivat vastauksia, sekä tiedekysymyksiin että päähenkilöiden elämänkulkuun. Sarjaan tehtiin vielä hypetetty "loppuratkaisu", neliosainen sarjakuva - se ei ollut edes huono vitsi, vaan pikemmin isku päin omistautuneiden fanien kasvoja.

Blacklist jatkuu aina vain, mutta sen loiston päivät ovat kaukana takana päin. Se kertoo FBI:n analyytikosta, jota pahamaineinen rikollinen auttaa jäljittämään etsityimpien listalla olevia pahiksia, ja kaksi ensimmäistä kautta olivat kiehtovia - pinnalla olivat rikokset, mutta pohjavireenä oli henkilöiden historia, ketä he oikeasti ovat, onko rikollinen analyytikon isä, kuka ja miksi palkkasi miehen joka sai analyytikon kanssaan naimisiin jne. Monet suuret kysymykset ovat vailla vastausta vielä 8. kaudella, ja päähenkilöiden suhde on kääntynyt päälaelleen monta kertaa - ei enää jaksa välittää, ja nykyään vain hyppelen jaksot läpi, etsien johtolankoja henkilöiden taustoista. Onneksi siitä on apua, että rikoksien mestaria esittää James Spader.

Viimeiseksi valitsen Serranon perheen, espanjalaisen perhesarjan tuoreesta avioparista, jonka katon alla pyörii kummankin lapsia aiemmista liitoista, sekä liuta kaikkeen sekaantuvia sukulaisia, ystäviä ja kollegoita. Pidin sarjasta kovasti ja välitin hahmoista (8 kautta ja 147 pitkää jaksoa 😳), ja odotin mitä tapahtuu, varsinkin kun lapset kasvavat aikuisiksi. Viimeinen kausi tuntui ensin solmivan lankoja yhteen niin, että kaikkien elämä järjestyisi parhain päin, mutta sitten meno muuttui yhtäkkiä hurjaksi. Aivan lopussa isä-Diego oli tekemässä itsemurhaa - ja heräsi, vuosi sitten kuollut Lucia-vaimo hymyili vieressä sängyllä ja olikin heidän häidensä jälkeinen aamu, se olikin Dallas-temppu! He nousivat ylös ja menivät keittiöön, ja siellä olivat kaikki lapset - koko sarja olikin ollut Diegon unta. Hupaisaa oli, kun lasten esittäjät yrittivät näyttää paljon nuoremmilta (ja pienemmiltä 🤣), mutta muuten loppuratkaisu oli typerä, taisivat vain ideat loppua.

Mutta onneksi on olemassa fanifiktio. Siellä on upeita vaihtoehtoisia juonia ja loppuratkaisuja, kirjoittajilta jotka eivät ole tyytyväisiä alkuperäiseen tarinaan tai haluavat lisätä jotain, joka on kaanonia eli sopii yhteen virallisten faktojen kanssa. Jotkut jatkavat siitä mihin alkuperäinen juoni loppui, toiset laajentavat virallisen käsikirjoituksen maailmaa. Parhaat ficcerit ovat ehkä nähneet poisjätetyn kohtauksen tai entä jos-idean, ja luovat oman juonen henkilöineen, tapahtumineen ja seurauksineen, täyttäen tarinan aukkoja tai antaen lisäsyvyyttä jollekin jaksolle - monet ovat niin vakuuttavia, että alkaa epäillä tapahtuiko jokin asia oikeasti sarjassa vai oliko se sittenkin ficci? Revolution lopetettiin 2014, ja luen aina vain äskettäin kirjoitettuja tarinoita sarjan henkilöistä.
