Mirror mirror on the wall

Pretty much everyone has heard of Snowwhite, Sleeping Beauty and other fairytale princesses, whose most important quality is their beauty. Little girls grow up with underlying expectations for female looks, and as grown women they are constantly determined by their appearance.

An old joke says that a woman must think like a man, act like a lady, look like a young girl and work like a horse - and of course, make it all look easy and gracious. Today, even men are more and more evaluated by their looks, but still an aged man with silver hair and is interesting and experienced, whereas a woman with the same looks is an old crone, and should do her best to look more appealing.

Even if you do your best, you can never win. Whether you wear make up not, the amount or style is never just right. Dyed hair or natural colour, someone has issues with that. Fashionable clothes, classic style or comfy outfit, you're over- or underdressed, too lazy or trying too much. For the world to be content with a woman's appearance, she should have the body of an olympic athlete (not too much muscle) and outfit, hair and make up of a royal princess (classy look), but yet she must look interesting and have found her own style.

Visible make up is often critisized as too much, but if you usually have a "natural" make up, your truly natural look makes people think you're sick. Many women say they feel better with make up on, and that's absolutely their choice. But if my natural face bothers you, don't look - with me, what you see is what you get. 

I don't meet customers at work, so I don't see why anyone could tell me how to look - clean and combed should be enough for everyone. Occasionally I may feel like refreshing my looks a bit, but the decision is mine, not anyone else's. When it comes to my clothes and hair, I haven't even known for thirty years what is fashionable, and couldn't care less - clean, comfortable and low maintain level are the key words.

I'm rather remembered as a loving wife and mother, a good colleague, a nice person and a strong independent woman, than for my gorgeous looks. I want to be an able, real character and fight the dragons if need be, instead of being an ethereal beauty, a damsel in distress. I wish this goal will come naturally for the girls and boys in the future generations - and if they also want to be heroes that look great, it's completely ok, as long as it's their own choice.

Jokainen tietää Lumikin, Ruususen ja muut satuprinsessat, joiden tärkein ominaisuus on kauneus. Pikkutytöt tottuvat pienestä saakka piileviin odotuksiin naisen ulkonäön suhteen, ja aikuisena naisia määritellään jatkuvasti sen mukaan, miltä he näyttävät.

Vanhan vitsin mukaan naisen täytyy ajatella kuin mies, käyttäytyä kuin hieno nainen, näyttää nuorelta tytöltä ja tehdä töitä kuin hevonen - ja tietysti saada se näyttämään helpolta ja sulavalta. Nykyään miehiäkin arvioidaan yhä enemmän ulkoisten ominaisuuksien mukaan, mutta edelleen hopeahiuksinen, ikääntynyt mies on kokenut ja mielenkiintoinen, kun taas samalta näyttävä nainen on vanha harppu, jonka pitäisi edes yrittää näyttää paremmalta.

Teit mitä teit, et voi voittaa. Meikkasit tai et, meikin määrä tai tyyli on väärä. Oli hiukset värjätty tai väri luonnollinen, jollakulla on siitä sanomista. Muodikkaat vaatteet, klassinen tyyli tai mukavuus edellä, olet silti yli- tai alipukeutunut, liian laiska tai yrität liikaa. Jotta maailma olisi tyytyväinen naisen ulkonäköön, hänellä tulee olla olympiaurheilijan kroppa (ei liikaa lihaksia) ja prinsessan asu, kampaus ja meikki (klassinen look), mutta silti hänen pitää näyttää kiinnostavalta ja löytää oma tyylinsä.

Näkyvää meikkiä moititaan usein liialliseksi, mutta jos yleensä meikkaat kevyesti, aito luonnollisuus saa ihmiset luulemaan, että olet sairas. Monet naiset tuntevat olonsa mukavaksi meikattuna, eikä siinä ole mitään pahaa. Mutta jos minun luonnollinen naamani häiritsee, älä katso - minä näytän samalta myös suihkun jälkeen. En tapaa asiakkaita töissä, joten kukaan ei voi sanoa, miltä minun  pitäisi näyttää - puhdas ja kammattu pitäisi olla tarpeeksi kenelle tahansa. Silloin tällöin kaipaan piristystä ulkonäkööni, mutta päätös on silloin minun, ei kenenkään muun. Vaatteiden ja kampauksen suhteen en ole edes tiennyt 30 vuoteen, mikä on muodikasta, eikä voisi vähempää kiinnostaa - siisti, mukava ja helppohoitoinen ovat avainsanat.

Haluan, että minusta jää mieleen rakastava vaimo ja äiti, hyvä työkaveri, mukava ihminen ja vahva, itsenäinen nainen, mieluummin kuin upea ulkonäkö. Tahdon olla pystyvä, aito ihminen ja vaikka taistella lohikäärmeitä vastaan, sen sijaan että olisin kalpea kaunotar ja neito hädässä. Toivotaan, että tämä tavoite on selviö tulevien sukupolvien tytöille ja pojille - ja jos he haluavat olla sankareita, jotka myös näyttävät upeilta, sekin on ok, kunhan se on heidän oma valintansa.
